Clinical Trial Working Groups
Goal for 2014: One concept from each institution. To date, 14 concepts have been received from 10 institutions! Concepts in the current BTCRC pipeline are outlined below.

GU:

Thoracic:
  • Concept: Non-small cell lung cancer (Indiana).
  • Concept: Non-small cell lung cancer (Michigan).
  • Concept: Small cell lung cancer (Nebraska).
  • Concept in process (not yet presented to CTWG): Non-small cell lung cancer with brain mets (Minnesota).
  • Co-chairs: Arkadiusz Dudek (Illinois), Nasser Hanna (Indiana).

Breast:
  • Concept: Triple negative metastatic breast cancer (Penn State).
  • Concept: Triple negative metastatic breast cancer (Rutgers).
  • Concept in process (not yet presented to CTWG): ER+ and/or PR+ and HER2- breast cancer (Illinois).
  • Co-chairs: Deborah Toppmeyer (Rutgers), Kari Wisinski (Wisconsin).

New faces in the BTCRC

The University of Illinois Cancer Center has named Robert A. Winn, MD, as interim director of the cancer center. Dr. Winn, an NCI-funded physician-scientist has served at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System since November 2012 and formerly practiced at the University of Colorado Hospital and VA Medical Center in Denver. Dr. Winn has extensive experience in lung cancer research, both as a clinician and as a researcher. Read more.

The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center recently named Brad Kahl, MD, as the institution's representative on the BTCRC steering committee. Dr. Kahl is associate professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin, director of the UW Lymphoma Service, and clinical research director for hematologic malignancies at UW Carbone Cancer Center. See Dr. Kahl's bio.

Andrea Hurd, CCRP, has joined BTCRC administrative headquarters as clinical protocol development coordinator. In her role, Hurd works with leading researchers to develop and coordinate Clinical Trial Working Groups. She also works with the BTCRC research development staff to help manage the early development of protocols. Read more.

BTCRC administrative headquarters continues our Q&A series covering topics of interest to our member institutions. This month, we address the following questions related to budgets:

  • What is the process for submitting a budget with the LOI to the funder?
  • What is the timeline for budget submission to a funder?
  • How will participating institutions be compensated?
  • Is the budget submitted with the LOI the final budget?
  • How do you determine site start-up and patient care costs?
