Wesleyan Celebrates 60th Year At Annual Founders' Day

North Carolina Wesleyan College celebrated its 60th year with its annual Founders' Day ceremony and awards presentation in Minges Auditorium of the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts on October 20.

The event opened with Reverend Timothy J. Russell, Assistant to the Bishop/Director of Ministerial Relations of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, presenting a Resolution of Thanksgiving to North Carolina Wesleyan College and affirming the historic and vital relationship with the NC Conference and the inaugural teachings of its founder, John Wesley, for which the College is named.  An excerpt of the resolution states: "The United Methodist Church gives thanks for Dr. Clark's visionary leadership, gives thanks for the diligent efforts of administration, faculty and staff to focus the school on its faith-based roots, celebrates the college's recent progress and vitality, and reaffirms our connection and support of North Carolina Wesleyan College. "
Guest speaker for the event was Bishop Paul L. Leeland, Resident Bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church in Charlotte.  Bishop Leeland is a 1971 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College, Duke Divinity School, and North Carolina State University.

The College presented its prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award to Dr. Daniel Crocker and Mrs. Brenda Crocker. The award honors the excellence in character, leadership, community service, and spiritual values of Algernon Sidney Sullivan, a lawyer, scholar, and orator prominent in New York City social and civic activities between 1857 and 1888.  Dr. Crocker and Mrs. Brenda Crocker have been very involved with Wesleyan College for many years with Dr. Crocker serving on the Board of Trustees since 1997, and he continues to serve as Vice Chairman.

Wesleyan's Distinguished Staff Award went to Joni Gardner, Director of Admissions. Gardner joined the College in 2007 and has served in various positions within the Admissions and Financial Aid Departments before her current role as director.

Special recognition was given to Mr. Dong Bum Jin and his wife, Jeong, who have shared their commitment to education with the students of Wesleyan through the establishment of the Ronald Stewart Scholarship and with the donation of the Rocky Mount Inn to the College.  Due to the Jin's extraordinary generosity and support of Wesleyan, Centura residence hall is being renamed Dong & Jeong Jin Hall.

The College awarded two honorary degrees during the ceremony. Dr. Leeland received a Doctor of Letters in Religious Studies and Mr. Jin received a Doctor of Humanities.

Alumni Spotlight

Michelle Scott '02 Goldsboro ASPIRE

A 2002 graduate of the NCWC Goldsboro campus, Michelle D. Scott, had a passion for the legal system and a tremendous thirst to gain as much knowledge as possible in that area.  She gravitated towards the NC Wesleyan Adult Degree Program because she could attend classes during the evenings while being able to go to work and go to school without impacting her work/life balance.

"Earning my degree has had a tremendous impact on my career.  I'm currently employed with the United States Attorney Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina as a Victim Witness Coordinator Supervisor and in this position I've garnered numerous promotions, hosted several statewide conferences, taught and trained other professionals within and outside of my career focused area and traveled to other countries such as Kosovo and Albania to assist them in developing victim witness programs for their countries.  I attribute my success to academic education and the life education I received at North Carolina Wesleyan Adult Degree Program," said Michelle.

Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Elena Koutouzos '10 Director Of Financial Aid

Elena Koutouzos, Wesleyan's new Director of Financial Aid graduated  in 2010 from NCWC as a member of the honors program with a double major in Business Administration and Accounting.  She received her Masters in Accounting from NC State and got her CPA certification in November 2012.

Elena started working at NCWC as a budget analyst and Title III coordinator.  In her new role of Director of Financial Aid, Elena will provide leadership and direction for all facets of financial aid on campus in order to create and maintain high quality customer service and regulatory compliance.   She is excited that her new position will allow for increased access and communication with students.

Since she was a child, Halloween has been her favorite time of the year.  She got married on Halloween here at NC Wesleyan.  Even her favorite memories as a student at NCWC include the annual Halloween trail.

When asked how she feels about being a part of the Bishop family, Elena's response was "Amazing, I have always loved Wesleyan, and now that I work here I feel like I have been given the opportunity to give back to this community.  I am really grateful that I can help students, just like Wesleyan's staff once helped me."

Meet ASPIRE Student Sajadah M. Shahid-EL

Sajadah M. Shahid-EL is in the ASPIRE program on the Durham campus of NC Wesleyan.  He is an accounts manager with a global logistics firm and chose to attend NC Wesleyan mainly because of the college's flexible schedule and support.

Sajadah is a married father of three so between work and family he does not have much "free" time.  From his first interactions with NC Wesleyan, Sajdah says the staff and faculty have been nothing but helpful and encouraging.  "My advisor, Raziya Fatteh, has helped to make my experience here even better, whether expediting requests, or simply making sure I get into the right classes in a timely manner.  I truly would not be so close to graduation without her steadfast support.

After graduation, Shahid plans to continue working and utilize his degree, skills, and experience to continue advancing his career.
