A Newsletter for Alumni and Friends of North Carolina Wesleyan College
Become A Part of Our Future!
The Day for Wesleyan Campaign has always been a time when the community, friends of the college, and alumni show their support by making donations. And it really matters! The college enrollment is growing rapidly, program offerings are expanding, the faculty are exceptional, and the quality of the student body is second to none. Wesleyan is moving forward and positioning itself for the next level in educational excellence. As a member of the Bishop family, will you help this year?

With the support of our donors, particularly all of our alumni, Wesleyan can make significant strides towards upgrading vintage buildings, classrooms, technology, labs and many programs. Your participation also helps with the college's rankings, recruiting efforts, and makes a statement to the current student body that they have a supportive family ... their Bishop Family. And family takes care of family!

The Bellemonte House To Be Relocated On Campus

After 28 years in its current location at the main entrance to NC Wesleyan College, preparations are underway to move the Bellemonte House across campus to a beautiful wooded lot just north of the Dunn Center.

In its new location, the Bellemonte will be renovated and restored with a tentative completion date of May 2017.  Plans are to add a semi-formal garden with period fencing to help showcase the beauty of this Circa 1817 national treasure.

Moving the Bellemonte House will not only provide a beautiful setting for the house, but will allow for a new building with the same architectural design as the Gateway Technology Center to be built at the College's main entrance to accommodate much needed classrooms and office space.

Bellemonte was originally the home of Dr. John R. Bellamy (1794-1846), a physician and large landowner north of Rocky Mount.  The house was acquired by the Braswell family of Battleboro in 1918.  Braswell heirs donated the house to NC Wesleyan College in 1988.  It was moved 400 yards south to its location at the main campus entrance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989

Wesleyan Homecoming 2016 will combine activities for alumni, students, and families into a full weekend of Wesleyan fun! Help NCWC Make A Difference In Our Community

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) here at NC Wesleyan is organizing a canned food drive on campus to help those less fortunate in our community.  The canned food drive will be a competition between all of the institutions in the USA South Conference to see which campus can collect the most cans and non-perishable items.  Overall, the USA South collected 33,907 items last fall and hopes to increase donations this year.  Collection stations will be set up around campus for anyone to donate cans and other non-perishable items.  The institution with the most items collected will be crowned the "Cans Across the Conference Champion".  Help us make a difference in our community!

"Kidney Warriors: Strong People Living With Kidney Disease" By Rocky Mount Artist Katrina Williams Opens In Mims Gallery

Opening NC Wesleyan College's Dunn Center 2016-17 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition Season is the group of paintings titled "Kidney Warriors: Strong People Living with Kidney Disease" by Rocky Mount artist Katrina Williams. A reception party with live music will be held in the Mims Gallery for Ms. Williams from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on Friday, September 23. Gallery hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and during evening and weekend public events at the Dunn Center. The exhibition will be in venue until September 26.

Katrina Parker Williams, a self-taught artist, is exhibiting forty paintings that chronicle her life as a person living with kidney disease. The artist will include portrait paintings of people living with kidney disease and subjects that draw our attention to support systems that have a positive impact on patients dealing with the disease. In addition, Williams has painted portraits of caretakers, coworkers, and family members, who make it possible for patients to live with a quality of life, as well as images featuring dialysis machines, needles, and various medications.

Williams asked three dialysis patients to become her primary subjects and whose stories of dealing with kidney disease were so inspiring to her. Their strength and positive attitude towards the disease showed her that she was not alone in her struggles with the disease. Medical staff and doctors, who are instrumental in helping the patients live with a quality of life, were also asked to participate in the exhibit, along with co-workers who made it possible for the artist to continue working for thirteen years after she was diagnosed with kidney disease.

The purpose of the exhibition "Kidney Warriors: Strong People Living with Kidney Disease" is to raise awareness of the serious health issue that kidney disease is. The exhibition will focus on life-saving and life-sustaining treatments, which include dialysis and kidney transplantation.  In addition, the exhibition will bring awareness to the need for living kidney donors.

Student Spotlight

Jared Johnson, Junior Accounting and Business Major

If you have ever visited NCWC's Bookstore, you have probably encountered student worker, Jared Johnson.  Jared didn't stray too far from home to attend Wesleyan. He grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and graduated from Southern Nash High School in 2014.

Jared decided to stay in Rocky Mount and attend NC Wesleyan because he liked the campus and the financial aid he received to attend.  When asked if he has enjoyed staying in his hometown, Jared said "it's cool because I am a part of my city's college. I had grown up going to basketball and baseball camps. I love actually being a part of the school and watching it grow. I feel like in the past two years that I have been here you see something about Wesleyan in the Telegram all the time. Wesleyan is really making a push to get more involved in the community. I think the community is really starting to see the value that Wesleyan brings to Rocky Mount."

Jared says the faculty at NCWC are open to meeting with the students to help them do well at Wesleyan.

In addition to working in the campus bookstore, he serves as the newest President of Covenant Campus Ministry, an outreach program through Christ Covenant Church to spread the gospel and make disciples of Jesus through Bible studies in dorms.

Jared is a junior working on a double major in accounting and business administration.
