Ireland Trip 2011 |
| Ben Bulben |
Almost time for the annual trip to Ireland. I'll be over there from July 27 to August 2nd with a group of intrepid travelers. If you're in Sligo on July 29th I'll be doing a solo show at Hawk's Well Theatre for the Yeats Summer School. Right now it's entitled 'Yeats, Joyce & Black 47.' Who knows what it will be by the time I get off stage?

So the Big Man is gone. Headed off down Thunder Road. We'll never see the like of Clarence Clemons again, that's for certain. He did leave the stage on cue, however, for the scene that he sprung from has just about run its course. Clarence was the archetypal rock & roll tenor sax player, raised on King Curtis and roadhouse gigs. But he'll be remembered mainly for his work with Bruce Springsteen. They both emerged in the late 60's down the Jersey Shore. What is it about those "dusty little seaside towns" and music? I've played many of them from Maryland up to Maine. Cheap little bars, the jukebox pounding, hot chicks, cold beer and pedal to the metal bands... Read more at: Black 47 Blog |

ROCKIN' THE BRONX - The Novel
But there's another side of him that doesn't totally gel - a certain coldness and even contempt for those around him and the world in general. It's hard to put your finger on because he hasn't always been like that - you can tell from the surprised looks of old friends from home when he brushes them off after a cursory greeting. This disciplined frigidity clashes fiercely with the natural charisma that oozes from him - the result being that you always feel slightly uneasy in his presence. Still, I never doubt but that's his intention. There's something in his past, too, that's occasionally whispered on the scaffold, especially when he's off conferring with Big Boss Dennehy who democratically treats every man like a piece of crap. But whenever I try to listen, the conversation of the bogmen trails off to be replaced by hostile glares. Of course, I'm the Southerner or "Free Stater as they describe me and just "don't understand" the Northern world that they come from. If Danny is a problem, he's their problem and whatever is in his past concerns them alone and isn't the business of some blow-in. Then again, on that crew of East Tyrone, South Armagh and West Belfast boys, pasts are rarely shouted from the rooftops for, from what I can gather, the British Army would like nothing better than a little chat with any number of them. Green Suede Shoes
Autographed copies of this and other larry kirwan books available at:
black47.com
This rock 'n' roll Angela's Ashes begins in County Wexford, Ireland, in the late 1950s, a now unrecognizable, priest-fearing backwater suffocating in superstition and strangled by sexual fevers. After an escape to the Bronx, Larry finds himself, like a musical Zelig, side by side with the Ramones and Blondie at CBGBs; the brothers McCourt, Lester Bangs, and Nick Tosches at The Bells of Hell; the Guinness soaked regulars of Paddy Reilly's; Cyndi Lauper while she ascends and burns; Joe Strummer, Rick Ocasek, Neil Young, and Shane McGowan. The shootings at the Academy and the tragic death of soundman Johnny Byrne punctuate the revels and excesses and presage the gloom cast by 9/11 and the loss of Father Mychal Judge and so many friends. Green Suede Shoes remembers three decades of a lost New York, and celebrates the music and song in which it now lives.
