Garden InspirationsFirst Week of August
The short weekly blog, by Duchess
Walking around with ice packs on our backs...
Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you are doing well and you have some fun garden time planned this weekend...

Have you heard of Tower Gardens?  The studio that I will start teaching sessions on Pilates has a tower garden, they are the coolest container garden I've seen so far.  AND GUESS WHHHAAATTT...we signed up to be your tower garden source :)  We will have a workshop soon in regards to how you can learn about the tower gardens!

Speaking of Pilates - if you would like to take Pilates from me, I have two places coming up you can join in on the fun.  My mom has been taking sessions from me since February, just once a week a 30 minute session and her improvement on her posture, ability to walk up and down the stairs, and all the kneeling we do in the gardens has increased so much.  As much as she dislikes me during her sessions she loves the days that follow.  You can join me at Yoga4Love in Red Oak.  I will start teaching in September on Tuesdays 9-9:45 AM, Wednesday 6-6:45 PM and Saturdays (not all will be me because of our FarmGirls schedule) 12:-12:45 PM THe Saturday class is a donation only.

Check out the coupon at the bottom for a special discount for our customers for the studio, they offer Pilates, Yoga, Bootcamp, Zumba, and Toning classes.  Great instructors and awesome owners!

Don't forget to tune in today to our show, you don't want to miss hearing about the FARFA conference coming up in September!  Become proactive about your food system and one way to be proactive is through education, this conference has many speakers on topics pertaining to our food system and security.  Be a leader in your community!

Have a wonderful weekend...

Who's Cooking for Kacey
shrimp   Menus can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I didn't realize how heavily I depend on their descriptions until I unsuspectingly ordered a "different kind of" shrimp cocktail. So I was minding my own business, happily trying out a new restaurant (S&D Oyster Bar in Uptown in case you are intrigued) and perusing the menu. I was not very hungry, so I wanted something on the lighter side and a safe bet is usually a shrimp cocktail. What I was expecting was something to this effect...
Vegetable Gardening this will be a section of tips, stories, recipes, and the like...

How To Save Tomato Seeds
Saving seeds from tomatoes is really easy and kind of fun. The process of how to save tomato seeds for next year is not very complicated, but it does involve a couple of steps. Why would you want to save tomato seeds when you can buy tomato plant starts and tomatoes at the local grocery store and farmers market? Simple, really. When you save seeds from a tomato you have grown, you are helping preserve the genetic diversity of tomatoes, and selecting for characteristics that make a tomato better. To save tomato....read more

How It Happened That We Don't Regulate Biotech

by Donella Meadows
Tide Pool
August 18, 2000

Back in the 1970s the awesome news that scientists had learned how to redesign genes started a regulatory flurry. Distinguished panels met to ask imponderable questions. Could some human-created form of life carry self-multiplying havoc into the world? How can we prevent such a disaster?

Back then genetic escapes were considered so likely that gene-splicing research was carried out in sealed labs. The citizens of Cambridge, Massachusetts, home of Harvard and MIT, forbade such labs within their city limits. Congress debated dozens of bills to regulate genetic engineering.
