African-American History Month Film Fest, February 7, 14, 21 & 28, 1pm

The Virginia War Museum will host a film festival during the month of February featuring films with African-American themes. 

 

February 7: The Tuskegee Airmen

February 14: The Bicycle Corps: America's Black Army on Wheels

February 21: Glory

February 28: Men of Honor

Follow the Drinking Gourd, February 7, 14, 21 & 28, 4 pm

Free admission (does not include admission to museum)

"Follow the Drinking Gourd" takes us back to the days when freedom was nothing more than a dream for those held in slavery. The story is a poignant and inspiring tale of one African-American family's desperate flight to freedom and how they used constellations to guide the way. This production is based on a children's book, "Follow the Drinking Gourd," written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

 

Let Me Tell You My Story: Harriet Tubman, February 28, 1 -3 pm

Free admission

This special presentation features Dr. Saundra Cherry portraying Harriet Tubman as she recalls stories about Mary Elizabeth Bowser, who became a Union spy in the Civil War. 

 

Looking Both Ways, through March 22


 

This exhibit showcases works by leading contemporary African-American artists and the diverse cultural influences reflected in their works. The works will be juxtaposed against works of traditional African art, which may include masks, figures, ceramics and more chosen from museum and private collections. In addition, "Looking Both Ways" will include archival photographs from the Daily Press documenting the Civil Rights era on the Virginia Peninsula. This landmark exhibition will include works by Kara Walker, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Beverly Buchanan and Williamsburg native Betty Blayton.

J. Thomas Newsome Court Case Exhibition, February 28 - April 15


 

Learn about the most prominent court cases of J. Thomas Newsome, Southeast Virginia's premier black attorney in the early 1900s.

Jackie Robinson, February 28, 11am & 2pm


 

A delightful performance about the baseball legend who played an important role in integrating professional sports. Jackie Robinson's story is brought to life by Bright Star Children's Theatre in a production that is heartwarming, lively and interactive. It inspires young people to do what is right, follow their dreams and never give up.
