Blessing of the Animals
Saturday, October 7, 5 p.m.
Sunday, October 8, 10:15 a.m.
In celebration of St. Francis of Assisi and his love for all creatures, St. Bart's will celebrate Blessing of the Animals worship services. Bring your beloved pets (cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, fish, etc.-all are welcome) and join in this joyous worship and blessing. Remember that animals must be properly restrained at all times (cage, leash, etc.).

All blessed animals receive a St. Francis medal. The Sunday 8 a.m. service is animal-free.

Remembering Our Beloved 4-legged Friends
If you have lost a pet, we invite you to bring a picture or other memento to place on the altar as we give thanks for the blessing that God's creatures have been in our lives.

An Alternative Orthodoxy: The Legacy of St. Francis
Sundays, September 17-October 15, 9 a.m., South Parish Hall
Join us as Franciscan friar and celebrated author Fr. Richard Rohr leads us in an examination of the teachings of St. Francis that will go well beyond his love of animals. During this series, Fr. Rohr introduces us to an alternative orthodoxy rooted in Franciscan theology and practice, that is both biblically grounded, but largely lost on contemporary Christianity.

THIS WEEK:
Orthodoxy vs. Orthopraxy - Is God more interested in correct belief or correct practice?
One of the great debates of the Reformation was whether we are saved by faith or works, grace or ritualism. That debate actually pervades both the Old and New Testaments and continues to this day.

NEXT WEEK: Mysticism over Moralism

Watch a Past 9am Forum Online!
We'd like to see you at the 9am Forum every Sunday morning! But if you miss a week, you can watch it on YouTube any time, day or night.
CHILDREN'S FORMATION
Give your Time and Smile to Sunday School!
No experience? No problem! Teaching sound scary? That's ok! We are in need of doorpersons in all of our classrooms. The only requirement is that all volunteers complete Safeguarding God's People training as a part of Safe Church practice. There is no greater gift you can give a child than your presence. We would love to have you. Contact Alex Howard, Children's Minister, to volunteer.
Sunday School
Sundays, 10 a.m., Education Building
Classes meet during the school year, September through early June.  Lessons are generally lectionary based for Preschool-aged and we also celebrate special holidays and events from the church calendar. Kindergarteners through 3rd Graders enjoy Godly Play, while 4th and 5th Graders adventure through the Bible starting with the Old Testament and then the New Testament.
Nursery Care
Sundays, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Education Building
Nursery Care is available every Sunday for newborns to 3 years old, free of charge. Our nursery staff are professional preschool teachers who have passed a background check and completed child safety training.
YOUTH CREW NEWS
Youth CREW
CREW stands for Continually Riding the Eternal Wave. Our Youth CREW welcomes all young people 6th-12th grade.

Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., during the school year
Middle and high school youth enjoy a meal and fellowship followed by games, learning and small group activity.

Sundays, 9-10 a.m., year-round
Kind of like Wednesday, but on Sunday! We share community and reflect on faith and scripture together. This program is offered between services so youth and families can attend either the 8 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. service together. Contact the  Rev. Mary Lynn Coulson for more information about Youth CREW.
NEXT WEEK
Proclaimers' Formation Session for Lectors and Cantors
Saturday, October 14, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., lunch to follow
All lectors and cantors and those interested in proclaiming the Word of God in worship are invited and highly encouraged to attend this formation session. Led by Nathan Costa, director of music and liturgy, and experienced proclaimers, we'll explore sacred texts and learn and share how we can best prepare and bring the Word of God to life in the midst of our congregation each week. We will have opportunity to practice and video-record our work and to receive generous feedback from one another. This is a good time for newcomers and young people to begin work in this ministry. A lunch in thanksgiving for this ministry will follow on the patio. Contact Nathan Costa for more information.

Celebrate Mother Mary Lynn and David
"I am overjoyed to announce that my fiancé David and I are engaged to be married on October 14. Our closest family and friends will join us at Camp Stevens in Julian that weekend for a small ceremony in the outdoor chapel. We are excited to celebrate with our St. Bart's family after the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, November 5 - please join us! Instead of gifts, we would welcome donations in honor of our marriage to St. Bart's partner school in Loranette, Haiti to pay for school uniforms. Thank you for continuing to support me in my ministry, and David and I in our new life together."

OUTREACH
Art Donations Wanted
Members of St. Bart's are encouraged to donate surplus art to the Thrift Shop Ministry. Art can be donated at the Thrift Shop on Poway Road or the Gallery at St. Bart's. The Thrift Shop is open 7 days a week and the Gallery is open between services on Sundays. You can also make arrangements for art to be picked up at your location.

The Thrift Shop is fortunate to have two volunteers that are knowledgeable in handling art. Each piece is examined to determine the best place to sell it to maximize the financial return. Some that are believed to be appealing to church members are displayed at the Gallery, others are displayed in the Thrift Shop. Art of more general value are sold through eBay. Those pieces of exceptional value are sold through professional art auctions or art galleries. One donated piece this year sold for over $1,400 at an auction. In recent years donated art has become an important revenue source for the Thrift Shop and members are encouraged to continue this practice. For further information please contact the Thrift Shop Manager, Laurie, 858-486-2110.
