Tia Walker, from "The Inspired Caregiver"

Did you know that 66 million Americans are caring for a parent, child, spouse, family member or friend?
That means that many of us in this parish are leaning into love that we didn't know was possible.
To support those of us who are caregiving, or those of us who have, you need care yourself. We turn to the Gospel for support and guidance, but also please consider joining us for this event:

Safe Environment Training at St John

Tuesday, October 3rd from 6:30pm - 9:00 in Egan Hall
(Child Care available)

You need this training if you volunteer on campus or in the classroom, coach, chaperone or drive for field trips, volunteer at the shelter, participate in the ministries of the church such as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans, CLOW, etc.

The Archdiocese of Seattle requires all Church Personnel (defined as all clergy, all employees, and all volunteers who have ongoing, unsupervised contact with minors and vulnerable adults) to take part in our Safe Environment Program in three ways. They must:
  1. Successfully undergo a criminal background check every three years
  2. Complete the Protecting God's Children course within 90 days of beginning service
  3. Read and sign the Archdiocesan policies of conduct
You may complete these requirements by accessing the Virtus database, our Catholic Risk Retention Group focused on the prevention of abuse.  New church personnel will need to create a Virtus profile ( http://www.virtus.org/virtus/index.cfm) under the "Registration" tab.

If you have already taken the initial training, you will only need to update every three years.  Sign in at the volunteer computer in the school office to find out if you are up to date.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
It's not too late to give!
Your personal participation in the Appeal is vital to our success as a parish in the Archdiocese - think about it: your one gift will support over 60 ministries and services that serve thousands of people a year! We belong to the wider Church - not just our own parish, but in communion with our brothers and sisters in neighboring parishes.
Our parish has not yet reached our Annual Catholic Appeal Goal this year. We still need to raise $21,985! I am asking those who were not able to give back in April/May to please consider a gift now so we can surpass our goal. Any size gift is appreciated and would help us tremendously - thank you!

A month ago, at the evening mass for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, Fr. Crispin asked who knew the Memorare.  Do you know it?

Remember O Most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help,
or sought your intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother.
To you I come;
before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.

Reading the Memorare reminds me of the joke that Fr. Gordon Douglas told us during mass a few years ago.  Jesus is walking around heaven one day, and notices that the place is filling up with sinners.  He goes to St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, and asks him what's up.  Peter says, "I keep turning them away, but they go around to the back door, and your mother lets them in."  Pray to your Mother.

If you have a prayer nugget you'd like to share with the parish, email Bill Marty, bill@takenroad.com.  Thanks!
Saint of the Month
Peter Paul Rubens
Saint Augustine
(354-430, North Africa)
Feast: August 28

Each month, Lynn and Brian Gough prepare a portrait of our Saint of the month.  It is displayed in the church in one of the south side shrines.  You are welcome to spend some time reflecting on the life of the Saint and praying for their intercessions.
