The Blessings of October
seasonal_pumpkins.jpg
October is special in many ways! It's the first full month of fall - even though here in Texas we've still had days in the 90's - and we celebrate National Family Partnership's National Red Ribbon Week . This year's theme is Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free . We know many of you are a part of this great movement; speaking in schools, communities, and other venues spreading the news about alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence prevention awareness. (You can find more information here .) And, this month is the start of the holiday season in the United States. Many celebrate Halloween or Harvest Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have health and safety tips.

NOTE: We would love to hear about your holiday seasons and celebrations! Please share your stories !

Part of the CDC's safety tips is an acronym for SAFE HALLOWEEN. I thought it would be fun to look at the word OCTOBER to see what we can find as blessings to celebrate within the letters:

Observe the goodness and kindness in others, even strangers - think about sharing what you see in them!

Creatively express your gratitude to others, friends, family members, and co-workers alike. ( Did you know that writing notes to family members is a family protective factor? Want to learn more about how to strengthen family bonds for yourself and to share with those you serve? Click here)

Trust your gut feelings. It's the best way to keep you safe and in touch with your priorities.

Objective noun. 1. something that one's efforts or actions are intended to attain or accomplish. 2. purpose. 3. goal. Reassess your goals. Do they still fit into the overall purpose of your life and what you want to accomplish? We want our goals to work FOR us not against us.

Be kind to yourself. We are better able to take care of others if we first take care of ourselves. Here are some great self-care tips.

Enjoy your life. Identify things in all areas of your life you enjoy - even the smallest of things.

Raucous - be loud AND rowdy! When you celebrate, celebrate with your whole body, mind, and heart!!! Celebrate loud and proud and encourage those around you to join in the party!

Does this acronym get your imagination flowing? Share yours with us. We'd love to hear from you!
