Programs for nonprofit leadership

bizRelay Leadership Transitions
Leadership transitions occur for any number of reasons, planned and unplanned.  This time can be a powerful opportunity to strengthen the organization if a thoughtful plan is in place. Executive transitions are transformational. Poorly managed, they often bring on a crisis, leading to decreased effectiveness and sometimes organizational failure.  This session will prepare executive directors and board members to lead their organizations through a process of planning for leadership transitions.

Jim Morris, Solid Ground Consulting Group
Jim's career spans 30 years in the human resources and organizational development field.  He spent his early career focusing on the human resources issues involved in mergers with several private sector companies before opening his own consulting practice in 1991.  Jim built a highly successful regional human resources consulting firm, MBL Group which he led for over 18 years. At MBL Group, he led the Stewardship Services Practice focused on consulting to nonprofit organizations. In 2010 Jim joined the Solid Ground Consulting Group to manage the Sustainable Leadership Practice focusing on Leadership Development, Succession Planning and Executive Transitions in the Conservation sector nationwide.

We hope that you are coming to the April 27 session on Governance as Innovation & Teamwork (above).  There you will hear parts of a video from Dr. Cathy Ann Trower,   a well known senior research associate at Harvard Graduate School of Education.   Dr. Trower has studied nonprofit board governance, and  policies and practices since 1996.

A part of Cathy's latest research includes a terrific one-page style assessment for board members.   If your organization is a Nonprofit Network Member and you would like to get a confidential profile of your own board - at no cost! - please email us at  together@NonprofitNetworkWa.org    Your board's information, entered anonymously, would then be part of the research  being collected by Dr. Trower.

This is not a promotion of some product or services; just an opportunity for simple & succinct    self-reflection completed by each of your board members in a confidential questionnaire.   It takes about 5 minutes per board member.   You could set it up on an iPad and pass it around before the next board / committee meeting.  The collective profile  of your board is sent back to you.   This  free Board Style Profile is another helpful tool to gain insight on what additional  perspectives you may want to bring to your board.

The bonus is it contributes to national research on boards.  People are full of 'best practices' language - most of which is simply 'we have always done it this way'  language -- help shift that by participating  in actual research.    Sample Questions:

Q.    I prefer:                   A.    What's possible                    B.    What's practical
Q.    I most enjoy:        A.    Starting new projects         B.    Seeing projects to completion
