Overnight rain on Monday caused some erosion to the switchback road down to the valley floor.

This is the third such incident this year (that we are aware of) and probably the most serious.

Access is not affected.

However, the road is now 'single lane' in more spots than before.  A reduced speed, especially on the blind corners, would be a very good idea.

All of the trees blocking the access road and the boat ramp were removed during the cleanup on Monday evening.

Some twenty volunteers, including a number of employees from Agrium Inc, got the job done.

Agrium Inc. also generously provided a fork lift that did an awesome job of moving the larger logs that remained after the saws, axes and chainsaws had done their work.

Brian Meagher with chainsaw.

Special "thanks" to Brian Meagher (TUC Provincial Biologist) for heading up this volunteer effort.  I'm sure that there are many dozens of Bow River fly fishers, and fly fishing guides, who are grateful for the quick response by Brian and the TUC-Bow River Chapter to this issue.

The permits needed to remove the silt from the road, parking lot and boat ramp are still several weeks away.  In the meantime, a 4x4 would be a good idea for anyone venturing on to the island.

Boat ramp free of wood, but still blocked by wall to wall silt

Johnson's Island (Carseland)

We made a trip to Wyndham-Carseland Park (Johnson's Island) late yesterday.  We found that the switchback road down to the boat launches had been worked on, and that a significant amount of new gravel had been spread on the road, from top to bottom.  It was pretty obvious from the very few tracks on the fresh gravel that we had missed seeing the work crew by a very short time.

We confirmed today that the road is now officially open to the public, as of this morning.

We also confirmed that the repairs needed at the actual  boat ramps will be completed next week, in time for the July 23/24 weekend.

In the meantime, please know that the boat launch nearest to the weir is covered with several metres of silt.

The other boat launch, closest to the bottom of the hill, has experienced some erosion immediately in front of the concrete slabs.
