Lovely weather we're having...
A harbor seal briefly surfaces to size up the frostbiting fleet last Saturday.
Greetings!
We sometimes forget that this is technically supposed to be our "off-season."

Between the New England Boat Show, our strongest frostbiting season yet, and planning our next Sail Loft gathering, there's lots going on---we're even starting to register kids for next summer!

Hope to see you soon!

BOSTON OCEAN RACING IS BACK!
Team announces 2012 St Martin Heneken Regatta bid on behalf of Boston kids
(Get the full press release here.)

Boston Ocean Racing, a high-performance ocean racing team, announced plans to compete in the 32nd Annual St. Martin Heineken Regatta. Boston Ocean Racing intends to build on their successful 2nd place finish in the 2010 event, and in doing so, boost their fundraising efforts on behalf of their designated charity, Courageous Sailing of Boston.

The St. Martin Heineken Regatta is one of the world's largest yacht racing events. With its challenging conditions and top prestige for the winners among the highly competitive ocean sailing community, the St. Martin event is expected to draw over 200 of the top racing yachts and their race teams from around the world.

In 2010, Boston Ocean Racing placed 2nd in the 30th Heineken Regatta and raised $7,500 for Courageous Sailing in the process; the 2012 goal is 1st place and $10,000.

For more information on how to support Boston Ocean Racing's 2012 campaign (and get some very cool BOR swag), visit their team's website: http://www.bostonoceanracing.org/.

____________________________________________________________

There are more high school sailing teams around Boston than anywhere else in the country. For many years, Boston Public School kids had been left out, but in the spring of 2011, this finally changed!

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, Courageous Sailing and the Boston Public Schools partnered to field the first ever, district-wide, Boston Public School High School Sailing Team.  The team was small, but successful (see below), and in 2012, with two returners, they are poised to achieve even more!

Please join us on Wednesday, February 29, at the Boston Sail Loft for a very special event to support Courageous' efforts to grow the BPS Varsity sailing team to 12 members and seed a JV team, too. But this is a program size that we can't sustain without your help!

All proceeds will go directly to supporting the BPS team, helping Courageous provide coaching, gear, and equipment.  And as always, Courageous' Sail Loft get togethers are the perfect time for Boston sailors to catch up with old friends, make new ones and help Courageous raise much needed funds for a great cause!!

Wondering how much it costs to support a sailing team and where the funds raised will go?

  •  Sailing gloves - $15/pair
  •  Dinghy boots - $50/pair
  •  Drysuits - $500/each
  •  Running a safety boat for a season - $1000
  •  Assistant coach - $2000
  •  Head coach - $3000
  •  New sails for ten 420s - $6000
Get your tickets today!
Tickets are just $15 in advance (purchase online here) or $20 at the door.

2011 VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR: ANDREW DAVIS, GREG FLEDERMAN & MARK GRANNAN!
Thanks to some seriously generous folks that donated their time in 2011, we got a new home for our lasers, safe winter storage for our bigger boats, and so much more!

We'd like to take a moment to thank Andrew Davis, Greg Flederman and Mark Grannan for helping to make Courageous the best darned sailing center it can be.

Andrew Davis came to us last spring to help design and construct Laserland - the space-efficient and safe home for our new laser fleet. Andrew (pictured below, second from the left) also led a team of trusty volunteers over the course of several (rainy) days to put the racks together. Without Andrew, our lasers would be homeless - and that's why he is one of our volunteers of the year!

Greg Flederman (his handiwork displayed in the photo above), better known by his alter-ego the Boat Doctor, came through for Courageous this winter by donating more than five days worth of work to shrink wrap thirty boats. That's 9 J/22s, 8 big boats, and the entire laser rack with 13 lasers inside. Whether it's a tricky boat system issue, or the most-efficient shrink-wrapping you've ever seen, Greg's the man. Scratch that, he's one of Courageous' Volunteers of the Year. Check him out at www.TheBoatDoctor.net

And finally, Mark Grannan!  Without fail, Mark (pictured below, on the left) devoted just about every Sunday of the 2011 season to Courageous.  Whether it was helping members off the dock, sail sorting, hurricane prepping, or just donning some gloves and cleaning the boat house, Mark was always up for whatever we asked, and did it all.  For all his versatility and 20+ days of help, Mark gets this year's James Saunders award.  James (below, second from the right), as you may remember, set the standard for volunteering in 2010.
We owe so much to ALL our helpful volunteers this year, whether it was scrubbing boats in April, organizing our sails in November, or patrolling the docks all season long.  We couldn't do what we do without your help.

If you are interested in volunteering some time to help us get ready for the season, or you would like to lend a hand on a specific project, please email our office manager, Lindsey O'Connell
Maybe next year, this could be you!

"NO-FROSTBITE" RACING UPDATE:
WINTER SERIES RESULTS
It has been a mercifully warm winter for the Courageous frostbite fleet, and our brave (crazy?) competitors certainly don't seem to mind---we've boasted at least 22 boats on the line every week!

The winter series wrapped up this past Saturday, which means we have only the spring series to go.  While it's uncertain whether Mother Nature has some major payback in store for us in February and March, what we do know is that this fleet is deep and competition will be heated as we close in on 3/17, the last race day of the season. Visit Flickr for more action shots of our frostbiters.

Congratulations to the top 10 winter series finishers:
1. Richardson/Sheffer (59 points/22 races); 2. Lindsay/Watson (72/22); 3. Lee/Breslin (104/22); 4. Murphy/DiMichael (109/21);
5. Krimski/Palmieri (118/22); 6. Brand/Marston (119/22);
7. Clancy/DeShong (130/20); 8. Gallagher/Olson (137/22);
9. Bodde/Callahan/Henderson(173/22); 10. Colbert/Marcus (174/22)
