A Message from OFE Principal
By Dr. April Williams

Happy holidays from Team OFE!

December is upon us and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is beginning. Thank you to all those families who assisted with donations of socks, stuffed animals and money/supplies for pets. Many families will have a brighter holiday season thanks to your generosity!

We have some exciting activities happening the month of December, including Team OFE's Winter Door decorating contest! Please feel free to join in our holiday activities or help out in a classroom this month.
The month of December usually shows a huge decline in attendance. I cannot stress the importance of your child attending school every day. Even the fun, games and activities are important to a child's social and academic well-being. Our daily attendance rate should be at 98% or above every day. This Thanksgiving, it fell below 93%. This is disheartening not only for me and the teachers, but for the students as well, because they missed so many great bonding moments with their class. Please make every effort to have your child in school every day up until December 18. Attendance matters, even in elementary school.
Please remember that even during the winter months, students still do go outside for recess, weather permitting. Make sure to pack a light sweater or jacket and label everything with your child's name. We will donate to a local shelter again from our Lost and Found table before we leave for the winter holidays.

Giving back opportunity:
We are collecting toys for the local fire stations this December.  At 1:00pm on Wednesday, December 16, the firemen will come out to pick up the new, unwrapped toys donated by our OFE students, snap photos and possibly let some kiddos see the inside of their truck! Please drop off your donation at the school's front office between now and December 16.

Special event planned at OFE: FREE ESL class for OFE parents and grandparents
  • Monday, December 7 from 8:30AM - 10:15AM in our school cafeteria
  • No advance registration required; please arrive about 10-15minutes early with a valid form of identification to enroll.

During these busy times, please take the time to enjoy all you are thankful for and how truly wonderful our children are. They are the heart and soul of this building and never cease to amaze me! Thank you for sharing them; they are all treasures!

Happy Holidays,
Dr. Williams

Please help us celebrate the Winter Holiday period with the following activities this month:
    1. December 3-18 - The 12 Days of Christmas: Classes with perfect attendance will enter a drawing to receive a special prize at the end of the day
    2. December 14 - Holiday T-Shirt with Jeans
    3. December 15 - Holiday Crazy Socks
    4. December 16 - Santa Hat Day with Crazy Socks and Holiday T-Shirt
    5. December 17 - Holiday Pajamas or Free Dress Day with Santa Hat and Class Parties
    6. December 18 - Jeans and Ugly Holiday Sweater with Santa Hat
    7. December 21 - January 4, 2016 - Winter Holiday Break

See you back on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 8:00AM.

Book Fair Bonanza!
By Laurie Pitzer and Selena Crochet, PTA  Book Fair Chairs

Thank you to all of our Bobcat volunteers who helped make our Fall Book Fair a huge success.  We couldn't have kept our shop open all week without the help of so many OFE parents!  The teachers truly enjoyed receiving books from their new wish lists and gift certificates from their students.  Even Ms. Campbell received some gifts of new books for the library from her students!

Our book fair has been the ONLY money our school library has received for its working budget for the past several years, so your purchases directly impact the library's budget.  Buying library-bound books that will last for years cost a bit more than just an average book, so it's super important that we keep funding our library.  Thanks to all that came out and shopped!  We can't wait to re-open in the spring!

Save the date for the Spring Book Fair:
April 18 - April 22, 2016
Every purchase helps put new, high-quality, library-bound books into your library!

Everyone who donated spare change or extra cash got to add their name to our giving tree during book fair week!

Reflections Art Competition

We had an outstanding 82 entries from 55 students for this year's Reflection Contest. The kids really did 'Let Their Imagination Fly" with this year's theme.   There was an entry in every category, with visual arts being our biggest category.  The judges were impressed with our large amount of entries but they were even more amazed with the incredible talent that was displayed.

The Reflections Award Ceremony and Art Exhibit was on Friday, November 20 and it was a great pizza party where OFE families were able to enjoy viewing each others entries as well as congratulating the winners of the contest. We will send 21 entries to the next level of judging at Regionals in January and hopefully some OFE Bobcats will then be chosen to proceed onto state and possibly nationals.  Good luck to those lucky 21 entries (listed below)!

Do You Know the Muffin Man?

Thanks to the early-morning efforts of PTA Spirit Committee Chairs John Erwin and Matt Torregrossa, the semi-annual and super-popular Muffin Man Mornin' took place on the school playground on Friday, November 13. Almost 300 OFE fathers and father-figures were welcomed on campus to share breakfast and play-time with their OFE student(s) and then walk them to their classroom (with a pit-stop to check out the Book Fair!). Join us in the spring on Friday, April 22 for this much-loved tradition!

Want to help out? Contact John and Matt at [email protected]

Teachers of the Week for November 2015

Ms. Robinson, is in her fourth year teaching kindergarten at OFE, but she did her student teaching here as well.  She serves on the o n the Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC),  and helps track our campus data as the Data Tracking Analyst.

"My team and colleagues are among some of the most supportive and caring people I've ever worked with," said Ms. Robinson, echoing so many of her colleagues.  "I count myself extremely lucky to be a part of the OFE family. It's amazing how we come together in times of need, and make the difficult times seem a little less difficult. The Beatles nailed it, 'I get by with a little help from my friends.'

_________________________________________________________________________________

Mrs. Gildersleeve has gone above and beyond to show what teamwork is all about. She supports our campus teachers and students with resources to support success for all. She remains positive and supportive throughout the day. Teachers and students are lucky to have her at Oak Forest. Congratulations, Mrs. Gildersleeve and keep up the great work!

Ms Lemoine's favorite superhero is Mighty Mouse"  because even the smallest person can achieve a lot.
What an appropriate choice for someone who just started her second year at OFE, teaching second grade and has a two-year-old daughter!   Ms. Lemoine values family - both her own and those at OFE.  She said, "Great families make a great school, and Oak Forest is blessed with wonderful families.  Students often see Ms. Lemoine and her own family in the neighborho od, and she said, " if you ever see me with my family, please stop and say hi."

What Ms. Remigio does with four and five-year-olds in her PreK classroom is remarkable. Her students carry a journal with them from st ation to station to keep track of their work. She moves around the room and meets with students one-on-one to see what they are doing. Her students are confident and always willing to tell you what they are learning. Her entire class shows res p ect when they walk down the hall, go to the cafeteria and are in class.
Veggie Garden Planting Underway

Thanks to dedicated volunteer  Merin Noonan (OFE PTA's Environment co-chair last year and parent of a FBMS 6th grader), almost all classes have now planted seeds in their class veggie garden! If you can help our students maintain these beds during the school year, please let your teacher know ASAP or contact our PTA Environment Committee at [email protected]

Auction Sneak Peek: Super-hero Appearance!
By Beverly Marsh, OFE K and 1st grade parent

We all know the theme at OFE this year is Super-heros, but I don't think anyone expected to see Preston and Matthew Marsh rolling up in the Bat-mobile with Batman himself!  Would your Bobcats like to ride to school with Batman this spring?  It is expected that this will be a popular auction item at the OFE's Spring Fundraiser, so be  ready  to bid on Friday,  March 4, 2016 at the SPJST Lodge! Generously donated by K parent, Justin Gordon.

Treasurer's Corner
By Theresa Velasquez - PTA Treasurer

Did you know that the PTA donated $6,693 to the library last year through two Book Fair events? All proceeds from the Book Fair go right back to the library and with these funds, Mrs. Campbell can fill the library with books that are enticing to read.  Library time seems to be an all-time favorite for all of our Bobcats so thank you for taking the time to stop by the event!

Be on the look out for our Spring Book Fair starting on April 18; it is also a great opportunity to volunteer an hour of your time at our great school!

PALS Corner:  Peer Assistance and Leadership Students
By Esperanza Salceda, PALS Member

Each month, one of our Peer Assitance and Leadership Students will be updating us on the awesome ways they've led the campus.  This month, fifth grade student
Esperanza  Salceda reported...

All of the 5th grade went on an amazing field-trip to Minute Maid Park. We learned about the train that holds the oranges, the Jumbotron and how they make a baseball. We visited the Press Room and were able to see where all of the announcing takes place during the game. It is important to be very quiet while in that room or everyone in the stadium might hear your conversation. We also got to sit in the dugout and hear all about the Houston Astros.

During Red Ribbon Week the entire school collected socks for the homeless. We collected 405 pairs of socks! They will be donated to Direct Hope at the Street Santa event.

Legislative Update
By Rachelle Park, PTA Legislative / Parent Engagement Committee

We had our first Coffee with the Principal on October 9 and it was a great success.  Many of our 4th and 5th grade parents turned out to learn how the Magnet/Vanguard Programs work in HISD Middle Schools.

What we learned from Dr. Williams' tips that morning:
  • If you would like your child to be in the magnet program at your zoned school, then you must apply.
  • If your child qualifies for the Vanguard Program (Gifted and Talented) they will automatically get a spot if they have an application on file.  You will not know if your child qualifies until after the application process.
  • Each Magnet School has its own focus such as STEM, Fine Arts, and Vanguard.
  • Testing of fifth graders occurs at Oak Forest Elementary in November, which includes the COGAT and IOWA.  Vanguard acceptance is based off of these tests, 4th grade scores, and teacher recommendations.
  • The application deadline is December 18 so don't delay!
  • When accepted into your highest-ranked school, you will be wait-listed for any school you qualified for that is ranked above that school.
  • You have until April 8, 2016 to accept at your preferred school.

You can visit the HISD website at www.houstonisd.org to learn more about these programs and submit your  application.

PTA Teacher Appreciation
By Renee Dahlmeier and Kathleen Orr, PTA Teacher Appreciation Committee (TAPS)

October was baseball season and Monday, October 12 was designated as 'Go Astros Day' at OFE.  The halls were filled with students and staff proudly wearing their Astros shirts to show their support as the team played in the playoffs.  The Teacher Appreciation Committee gave OFE ball caps and Cracker Jacks to all the teachers and staff. Below (right) are Ms. Mallory and Ms. Janish showing their Astro spirit on Go Astros Day!   Thanks for making OFE a hit, teachers and staff!

TAPS provided a Thanksgiving Feast luncheon after early dismissal on Wednesday, November 18.  Teachers and staff enjoyed a meal of turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans and a variety of sweets.  OFE is so thankful for all our teachers and staff!

PTA Arts in Education
By Heather Sterr and Leah Salinas, PTA Arts in Education Committee

On Tuesday, November 24, the PTA Arts in Education Committee brought in their first performance of the year to the delight of our students!

Tom's Fun Band used music and comedy to make learning about preserving our natural resources fun and thought provoking. Participants learned how to reduce the amount we waste by making small changes everyday. Reusing things is made fun when participants are challenged to use their imaginations to repurpose found objects. Finally, recycling was explained and practiced in a musically interactive way. Our OFE students chanted, clapped and sang along with this popular band as they learned more about their role in conservation.

PTA Membership Myths
By Gaby Rodrigues and Courtney Gaydosik - PTA Membership Chairs
Only moms join the PTA.
A strong PTA needs the support of parents,  family members, teachers, school staff members and the community. Anyone who cares about our children should join the PTA.

* Joining the PTA means I have to volunteer.
The PTA appreciates everyone's membership, regardless of your availability. You will be made aware of volunteer opportunities as they arise; any amount of time helping out at OFE is appreciated!

* PTA Membership never expires; I only have to join once.
Each new school year begins a new PTA membership year. Your membership will be good through the end of August 2016.

* I do not have any more hours in the day to give to the PTA.
If you are unable to give your time, please consider giving us your financial support. You will have the satisfaction of knowing your contribution helps fund activities and events for our OFE students and teachers throughout the year. Check our website for details.

* The PTA is only made up of stay-at-home moms who need something to do.
Our 70-person PTA Board is made up of a wide range of people: dads, full-time and part-time working mothers and stay-at-home moms who juggle bills, homework, sports and household chores just like you :)

* My child's life will be the same whether or not I join the PTA.
Not only does PTA membership put you in regular contact with other involved and vocal OFE families, but also our OFE teachers and administrators. This shows you are interested and actively invested in their overall educational experience.

* I have an idea but the PTA isn't interested.
Please share your new ideas and your suggestions for improvement at any time. We strive to keep our activities and events fresh and exciting for our students and teachers, which can only happen with your input. Email Betsy Denson, our PTA President, to get the ball rolling with your idea: [email protected]

PTA Member Spotlight:  Griffith family

The Griffiths joined the PTA "to support our awesome school!" mom Katherine said.  "The PTA does so many great things to support our fantastic teachers and staff, who do such wonderful things for and with our kids.  We can't always do as much as we would like to help ourselves, so supporting the PTA is one small way we can show our support for the school."  Katherine is an engineer with ExxonMobil, and dad, Mark, is a percussionist with the Houston Symphony.  Even with their busy schedules, Katherine and Mark are looking forward to being part of OFE events.  "I love the opportunities to spend time with my children at school," Katherine explained.  "I like the classroom parties and thanksgiving luncheon.  I am also looking forward to spending time with some of my favorite people at the school Gala in the spring!"

"Last year,  Katherine  shared, "Grandma Susan and I visited Benjamin's class to share a drawing of our family tree. This depiction showed our relationship to Jacob Riis, a famous social reformer in New York City in the early 1900s.  We also read a children's book about him.  I hope to do that again with both kids' classes this year."  Benjamin is a third grader in Ms. Bagby's class, and Katie is the second in her family to be in Ms. Janish's Kindergarten class.

The OFE theme this year is super-heroes.  "Our family includes our "heart hero" - baby Adam,"  Katherine  explained.  He was born with congenital heart defects.  He had open heart surgery when he was 10 days old, and is now thriving!  Katie and Ben were both very strong during his early fragile days, and are looking forward to Jumping or Hooping for Heart this spring to support the American Heart Association.  Also, Mark ran his first marathon in Chicago on Team Ronald McDonald House, which is close to our hearts, as we stayed at the Ronald McDonald House at Texas Children's Hospital while Adam was in the Cardio-vascular ICU following his surgery.

Thank you, Griffiths, for sharing your time and your hearts with the OFE PTA!

Did you know...What is GradeSpeed and GradePro?

Keep up with your child's grades on Gradespeed (website) or via an app called GradePro! Both free services are used across HISD in order to keep up with a child's attendance and grades. To register online, you will need your student's HISD ID number which can be found on their report card.  If you still have difficulty with registration, please  call the HISD Helpdesk at 713-892-7378.

Box Tops for Education
By Cara Ramelow and Maureen Marcon - Box Tops Committee Chairs

Oak Forest Elementary needs your support in raising money for our school.  There are a couple of easy ways that you can help make a difference!  (1) You can register your Kroger Plus card with Kroger's Community Rewards Program and (2) you can collect Box Tops for Education.  Last year we earned almost $6,600 between these two programs and we are determined to beat that total!!

For every 10 unexpired Box Tops that you submit, you will be entered into a monthly drawing to win a free ice cream cone.  Your box tops submissions can be turned into your teacher or you can drop them in the blue basket located by the bench in the front atrium.  It is helpful to submit your box tops in groups of ten in a zip lock bag or envelope and don't forget to include a box tops raffle slip for every ten Box Tops submitted.  You must include your full name and classroom on your bag or envelope so you can be entered in the drawing.  There is a raffle slip at the bottom of this article or you can go to this link -   http://whub34.webhostinghub.com/~oakfor5/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Box-Tops-Raffle-Sheet.pdf

So far this year we've collected 9244 box tops!!  As of the end of November, Ms. Rogers' class is in the lead for the ice cream party but her class better keep collecting because Ms. Graeve's and Ms. Randle's classes are right behind them!!!!  Congratulations to Kelly Isabel Vasquez and Ava Trevino, the winners of the monthly drawing for a free ice cream for November.
