BOBCAT BEAT
A Monthly PTA Publication
A Message from OFE Principal
By Dr. April Williams

Happy February! We are still reeling with excitement about our Blue Ribbon nomination!  I'd like to extend another huge  THANK YOU to everyone who makes OFE the BEST elementary school in Houston. I am excited about the ch allenge of completing the application and hopeful that we will receive this distinguished honor again (announcement will occur next school year). Here is a littl e bit of background about what it means to be a Blue Ribbon school, as well as a link to a media post about our nomination:

National Blue Ribbon Schools are public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools that are producing outstanding results for all students. They have demonstrated consi stent excellence, and made progress in closing gaps in student achievement. The National Blue Ribbon Schools recognition program is part of a larger U. S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about effective school leadership and promising instructional practices.

January was a busy month as we got back into the swing of things after the holiday. We celebrated our students who displayed their EMPOWER values the previous nine-week grading period and those who had perfect attendance. We also crowned OFE's Spelling Bee champion Hannah Salinas and runner-up Evan Neff! We know both will represent us well in the district competition. Great job to all of our students and parents for these outstanding achievements.

I hope to see you at the next Coffee with the Principal where we will discuss the topic of Reading. Have a fabulous February!

Enchanted Masquerade - OFE Auction 2016
By Ruth Mendez and Courtney Zavala - OFE Auction Committee  Chairs
Oak Forest Elementary's 2016 Silent and Live Auction - " Enchanted Masquerade " will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 7 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88 (1435 Beall St.) The auction is OFE's biggest fundraiser of the year benefiting: next year's cost of WITS (Writers in the Schools), new playground equipment for the blacktop side of the school, enhancing environmental education and repairing technology at the school (smartboards, specifically).  The event will include dinner, live music by Breakfast at Tiffany's (K teacher Tiffany Janish's band!) and is a BYOB Adult-Only event!

Want to help? Here are four ways to step up:

1. Join us!

Purchase your table or ticket by visiting the OFE Auction website, http://www.oakforestpta.com/fundraising-events/spring-auction/. UPDATE: ALL TABLES HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT as of 2/1/16. General admission tickets still available!

2. Donate an Item!

Please consider donating an item to the auction. If you choose to donate items (such as unused gift cards or a service at a local business like a haircut or massage or batting cage time), please remember to fill out the Auction Donation Form located at www.oakforestpta.com/fundraising-events/spring-auction and send it along with any items to the front desk at school. If your donation is a large item that your child can't carry, please e-mail [email protected] and we will arrange for pick-up.

3. Organize Socials with OFE friends!

Gather up your friends and host a social for parents or students. Examples of past socials include: a skating party for 2nd graders, a zumba class with dinner for ladies, a ladies weekend away, dinner prepared by a professional chef for 10, etc. Please e-mail [email protected] if you are willing and able to organize a social.

4. Volunteer!

Look for volunteer opportunities via Living Tree: we will need help with set-up, managing various areas of
the  auction the night of the event, etc.

Fourth grade teacher,  Mrs. Colville,  exudes respect from our core values. Respect has been shown through her students as well. Her teaching style includes project- based learning and strategies. She is a great influence on our campus.

Fifth grade teacher, Ms. Noble, is in her second year at OFE. She breaks down the Science TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, as defined by Texas Education Agency - TEA) into engaging  hands-on activities. Students say their favorite thing about Ms. Noble is that she makes learning science EXCITING! Ms. Noble - keep on inspiring our future scientists. We are lucky to have her here at OFE!

Rachel Herold's fourth grade lessons are filled with data driven instruction and differentiation. She is eager to meet the needs of every one of her students. OFE is lucky to have her! Congratulations, Ms. Herold.

First grade teacher, Mrs. Meaux, empowers her students in many ways. She uses writer's workshop to inspire creativity not only in her classroom but with a neighboring kinder class. She involves learning by creating a positive classroom culture through student led show tunes like, "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from Oklahoma and "Good Morning" from Singing in the Rain. If you have a chance, stop by to witness this incredible transition to the carpet through song at 8:30 in Mrs. Meaux's class. Congrats,
Mrs. Meaux!

PALS Corner:  Peer Assistance and Leadership Students
By Jennifer Brown, OFE Counselor
Bobcat Beat Submission by Bobcat Sharon Vera:

Everyone was so happy to get the day started. Anxiously waiting in line for your teacher to pick you up, you whisper to your friends about all the wonderful times you will get today. In fifth grade,  Ms. Noble's class started off making snow globes with their picture inside (instead of snow they used glitter). The final product was so pretty and cute. They then raced to Ms. Rogers' room for a scavenger hunt around the school finding puzzle pieces, collecting them, and winning reindeer poop (chocolate raisins). In Mr. Malkowsky' s class fifth grade got to sing karaoke. SO FUN! In second grade, Ms. McLaughlin's students made happiness jars. This is a jar that is  filled up with thoughts, feelings or ideas that make us happy. They then donated the happiness jars to the Texas Children's Hospital foundation. GO MS. MCLAUGHLIN'S STUDENTS!! Kindergarten and third grade made beautiful ornaments to share with their families. The Peer Assistance Leadership Students  did a Random Acts of Kindness day which was an event where the PALS performed and gave treats to the OFE "behind the scenes" staff to show their gratitude and appreciation for all they do!

Additionally, the PALS signed up for their spring volunteer opportunities at our first meeting of the 2016 school year. They will be helping out with the Souper Bowl of Caring, Pennies for Patients, Mix It Up Lunch, school tours, PTA meetings, coffees with the principal, Wizard of Oz play, spring book fair, Muffin Man Morning and Field Day. What a busy group of leaders we have here at OFE!

Mix It Up Lunch is set for Thursday, February 11 during all lunches; Feb. 11 is a Closed Lunch to the public.

Tips - Request from recent OFE PTA Survey

Can I sync with Outlook/Google Calendar/iCal?
Of course! LivingTree allows you to subscribe your LivingTree Calendar to popular calendars like the Mac, iPad, and iPhone Calendar, or Google Calendar, and Outlook. Once subscribed, all of your LivingTree events will automatically flow into your other calendar application. Take a look at the  Calendar guide for instructions on how to do this - It's easy peasy!

Subscribing to the LivingTree Calendar
You can subscribe to the LivingTree calendar from an existing calendaring program, including Outlook, iCal, and Google Calendar.   NOTE:  It's not a true sync - you can pull your LivingTree calendar into your external calendar, but not vice-versa.   If you want to add your LivingTree calendar to an external calendar including Outlook, iCal, and Google Calendar, just follow the steps below. Once your calendar is synced with LivingTree, all of your LivingTree events will feed into your other calendaring program. If you RSVP 'no' to an event in LivingTree, the event will no longer show in your outside calendar.
  1. Click the subscribe icon found at the top right of the calendar page above "+ Event" to begin.
  2. Click the "Subscribe by clicking here" link (iCal or Outlook), or copy the url in the pop up window that appears after you click the subscribe button (Google Calendar). Any attachments to events will not pull through to external calendars.
Warning: Anyone who obtains the link will be able to view all event details associated with your LivingTree calendar.  If you feel your address has been compromised, click the 'Generate New URL' button and repeat the subscription process detailed below.
  1. If you clicked the "Subscribe by clicking here" link (iCal or Outlook), your calendar subscription process will start automatically. If not, take the copied url and enter into the calendar program you plan to utilize (ie: Google Calendar). Below are instructions for iCal, Google Calendar, and Outlook.
iCal:
  1. If you clicked the "Subscribe by clicking here" link, your calendar subscription process will start automatically. You will be prompted to 'Subscribe' or 'Cancel', select 'Subscribe' and you are all done.
  2. If you had problems clicking the link, and starting the subscription process automatically, you can copy the link and proceed manually in iCal. To do this simply choose Subscribe from the Calendar menu.
  3. Paste the copied the URL from LivingTree.
  4. Check the "Refresh" checkbox to have iCal automatically update your copy of the calendar when your group or organizations publish updates.
  5. Click the Subscribe button.
  6. You're done! iCal adds the schedule to your Calendars list and places a curved arrow next to it. Double-click the name if you'd like to change it.  Note that you can't make other changes to subscription calendars. More info Here.
Google Calendar:
  1. Click the down-arrow next to Other calendars.
  2. Select Add by URL from the menu.

  2. At the prompt, add this Internet Calendar to Outlook, subscribe to updates, and click "Yes".
  3. The Internet Calendar opens in side-by-side view in the Outlook Calendar and is added to the Navigation Pane in Calendar view under Other Calendars. The calendar will check periodically for any updates made by the calendar publisher. More info Here.

  2. Tap 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'.

  7. 7On the next screen, change the name of the calendar under 'Description' if you choose - then tap 'Save'.

How do I change my notification preferences?
In your account, click 'Edit Profile & Preferences' Scroll down to notification settings, and select or de-select the notification options according to your preference. Be sure to save your changes before you exit. This will allow you to select or unselect receiving an email for every Living Tree post made by the PTA, the school principal or your child's teacher. The alternative is to log into www.livingtree.com or open the app and read information on an as-needed basis.

Does LivingTree have translation capability?
YES!!  Select your preferred language by clicking on 'Edit Profile & Preferences' in the upper-right corner of your account. Scroll to 'Language' and select your preference from the dropdown. If other members of your group have a different preferred language, the translate option will show up and you can translate the conversation! Feel free to post/comment in your preferred language as others will be able to translate your post in their account as well.

Recycling Club Hits the Headlines
By Julie Wilson and Victor d'Souza, PTA Green Committee

Did you know that Oak Forest Elementary recycles paper and plastic every week that weighs as much as the average American woman? Our intrepid team of ten fourth- and fifth-graders, resplendent in their orange safety vests, meets every Friday after school. They spend an hour gathering and hauling over 150lbs of recycled trash from the classrooms, work rooms and office area out to the blue dumpster at the back of the school.

Their efforts are deeply appreciated by the teachers, who see it as one of the most important jobs of the PTA. Even though they are working, our recyclers have a lot of fun working in teams and earning regular treats. We have rotating team captains, and they work so well together that very little adult supervision is needed.

Our very own PTA President, Betsy Denson, wrote about recycling efforts in schools around the area in a November edition of the Leader, and featured our Club - check it out  here.

The recyclers were also featured in the November school show "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle", joining Tom's Fun Band on stage. They helped to reinforce Tom's key messages about recycling.

The Recycling Club members are:  Jaden Grayum, Autumn Hunter, Sophia Fox, Maren Ware, Krisna Mahendran, Kiya Glave, Evan Weltin, Jesse Espinosa, Carson Amos, Ben Ledman and Aidan Clark.

Please thank them when you see them! If your student is interested in joining the Club, please contact
[email protected].

OFE Coach's Corner: Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart
By Coach Margaret Locke, OFE Physical Education Department

We are thrilled to be supporting the American Heart Association to help teach our students and families how to take care of their hearts through the Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart program. Our program kicked off February 2, 2016 and will run until February 19, 2016. What does your child get out of participating?
1)        YOUR CHILD learns about the importance of the heart- how it works, and how to take care of it: With the educational programs from the American Heart Association, our students learn how the heart works, how exercise affects their hearts and how to stay FIT FOR LIFE! Approximately 80 percent of the funds raised go directly to the mission, funding extensive research efforts, heart education and programs to help us all live healthier lives.

2)       YOUR CHILD reaches out to friends and family: The safe online tool makes it easy for your child to set up a web page and send emails to support their fundraising efforts and to share life-saving information. The new app for smartphones also makes it easy for your family to text friends and extended family to join their campaign to be a heart hero. When your kids talk about their reasons for participating (such as a lost loved one or a family history of heart disease), it helps them connect the dots to a healthier life (and might even inspire a few other family members!).

3)       YOUR CHILD feels good for making a difference in people's lives! Funds raised support the Heart Association's research and education initiatives that save lives in our community. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans and more people die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. The American Heart Association is second only to the U.S. government in funding research in heart disease and stroke. Additionally, the school earns money for PE equipment so we can keep our kids MOVING!

We hope you are as excited as we are to support our students in this important experience.

Visit www.heart.org/jump or www.heart.org/hoops to get started today!

OFE Healthy Kids Week Update
By Joey Hunter, OFE Healthy Kid Chair

Fun was had by all who braved the cold weather to attend the first ever "Greet the Sun Run" on Wednesday, January 27, during Healthy Kids Week. Tri-Kids Inc. came out to the school on Friday, January 29 to get the kids psyched up for this year's big event. Although judging from this group, they didn't need encouragement; they were ready to go! The turn-out was great and the energy and enthusiasm were impressive.

The 2016 Houston Texans Kids Triathlon will be held in April (exact date is still TBD). The event will be held at the Berry Center and will extend over two days to accommodate all who want to participate. Junior and Senior divisions will be Saturday and Sunday respectively. OFE is sponsored by United Healthcare this year; A BIG thank you to Mandie Eichenlaub for her help in obtaining their generous sponsorship. There will be multiple training opportunities at Oak Forest Elementary, Harriett and Joe Foster YMCA (34th St. location) and Frank Black Middle School. The Wednesday morning training runs at OFE will be ongoing up to the date of the triathlon. Joey Hunter, OFE PTA Healthy Kid Chair, will be facilitating these runs and requests volunteers to help out using this link:

All completed exercise logs from Healthy Kids Week
should be turned in to the OFE front office by  this Friday to be entered into the drawing for a grand prize!

PTA Member Spotlight: Brooker Family

Pictured are:  Jade (mom),  John (dad),  Jeb (Kindergarten - Mrs. Rodriguez) and  Jilian - Turning 4 This Month! (Future Bobcat)

Known to friends and loved ones as the "J" Crew, John and Jade Brooker joined the PTA in 2015 when Jeb, son, started Kindergarten. John is in Industrial Sales, and Jade is a Recruiter. They also believe in being part of the community and that the OFE PTA is the heartbeat of the OFE Community. The Brooker Family also loves taking family trips. Last year, they were fortunate enough to spend the Fourth of July weekend at the Hyatt Hill Country as well as a whole week in Destin, FL. On the docket for 2016 is another Destin trip for Spring Break, and a mom and kids' trip to London to see Jade's sister once school lets out. Family trips give the Brookers a chance to enjoy one another without all of the distractions of life. If there is a fun pool, it is a possible destination for a Brooker family vacation ... add a golf course, and it's probably a guarantee. When the Brookers are not traveling, they enjoy Houston Cougar sports, cheering on the Astros, and spending time with extended family and neighborhood friends.

What is t he single most thing you enjoy so far about OFE?  "We love the tight knit feel that OFE gives the area. We are a few small neighborhoods in the middle of a massive city, yet it feels like we are in our own little town and OFE is our town square."

Many  PTA members say that they joined the PTA to show appreciation and support of their school.  If you aren't a member, you can make joining part of your new year's resolution, and show support for OFE alongside families like the Brookers: join for $6.50 online at www.oakforestpta.com

Joining OFE PTA FaceBook Group
By Carolina Chavez - Social Media Chair

So you are not on our Facebook page?   How can you join the most happening Facebook group around?

Type "Oak Forest Elementary School - PTA" in your Facebook search field.

  • Go to the group and then click Join Group in the top-right corner (screen shot shows Joined where the Join Group option will appear). You can set your notification preferences by viewing the options on the Notifications button.
  • You will have to wait for a group admin to approve your request. You may be asked by chat for the secret password (Heavens to Murgatroyd!), or to verify your identity by naming your child's teacher. This is a closed/private group. That means you can find us in a search result but you can't see content unless you are a member.
  • It's just as easy to leave the group as well. By clicking the down button on Joined, you can leave the group with a simple click.
This page is used for reminding you of upcoming events and sharing information amongst our OFE families. The calendar function is used actively so members will be invited to events such as: early dismissal days, spring break, fun runs, and any school or PTA related events. Many users find this feature helpful as it can populate any online calendar you use. All posts are monitored to stay within strict regulations for the sake of ensuring our student's security and to keep this page as helpful as possible to all involved.

OFE PTA Facebook guidelines:

1. Photographs of OFE children are not allowed and will be promptly removed to ensure the student's security.
2. Posts with no relevance to OFE should be posted on the Facebook page of the individual, so as not to spam the group's members, many of whom receive notifications of posts.
3. Solicitations, fundraisers, political posts, community volunteer requests that are not related to OFE events or OFE PTA efforts will not be approved for posting.
4. Racial insults, personal attacks, inflammatory or frequent irrelevant posts are grounds for removal from the group. Banned users must wait a minimum of a one week "cool down" period before they are allowed to rejoin the group. Repeat offenders may be permanently banned.
5. Group admins will make a reasonable effort to notify users when posts violate the guidelines, but this will not always be possible. Posts in violation of the guidelines may therefore be removed without notice. Admins do not monitor the Group 24x7, so please report suspected violations by personal message.
6. The group is closed (private); only active families attending OFES are welcome to join us.
