Spotlight on Field Day

Every year, OFE Bobcats look forward to Field Day which this year will be on May 15. Coach Barefield has given us a sneak peak of the day's activities which will be centered around a Passport to America theme. Come out to help with your kids' class if you can...it's a lot of fun!

2.  New York - The garment district of the USA: Kids will put shirts and sun visors on themselves and then their teammates.

3.  Stake the State: Kids will match a state card to the state painted on the blacktop.

4.  Idaho - The potato state: The kids will toss what else? Potatoes.

5.  Kentucky - The Kentucky Fried Chicken State: Kids will coat a "chicken" with Colonel Sanders' secret recipe by passing it around with their arms, legs, etc.

6.  Virginia - The Virginia Tech mascot is known as the Gobbler: Kids will spell out Virginia Tech in a relay.

7.  California - The gold mining state: Kids will find gold nuggets for their team.

8.  Illinois - The home of Abraham Lincoln: Kids will toss a penny (frisbee) into a fountain (hula hoop) to make a wish.

9.  Vermont - Ben and Jerry's ice cream was founded in this state: Kids will get as many scoops of ice cream (bean bags) onto a cone (Pringles can) and into the team's bucket.

10.  Snack Station

11.  Kansas - The tornado state: Kids will keep objects on or off a parachute.

12.  Michigan- The car capitol of the world: Kids will pull parts of a car (blocks on a scooter) through the assembly line and then deliver the assembled cars to the car dealerships.

13.  Alaska - The iceberg state: Kids will walk across the icy waters (gym floor) and navigate an obstacle course.

14. Delaware- General George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day: Kids will cross the freezing Delaware River on mats (boats).

15. Pennsylvania- Known for all their football teams, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers: Kids will play a modified game of football flag.

16.  Montana - This state has the best recreational fishing due to all of its wonderful rivers and lakes: Kids will catch colored fish and do the exercise that's written on the fish.

16.  Colorado - Known for all its canyons and sadly in recent times, its wild fires: Kids will do a " bucket brigade" to put out the "fire."

17.  West Virginia- This state is known for the famous Hatfield and McCoy family feud. One of the disputes was over land boundaries: Tug of War!

Spotlight on Rumpus in the Rainforest

Last years kindergarten classes did an artist study and donated funds to The Periwinkle Foundation. They raised over $2,000 for the program that develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children's Hospital. This year they are doing a rainforest study.

The teachers chose a topic that children could learn to research using the IIM method. (http://www.iimresearch.com/)

Kindergarten teacher Ms. Janish says that kids love learning about the rainforest and its animals.

"We are heading a campaign with The Rainforest Trust and acting as Rainforest Ambassadors," she said. "For every $100 dollars we raise, we will save an acre of the rainforest. This is open to the community but we may only accept cash donations. We are also putting on a musical called Rumpus in the Rainforest. This is will be held at the PTA meeting on April 16th and will be the last day we take donations."

Parents...get your cameras and wallets ready!

PTA Member Spotlight

This month we feature two OFE PTA families:

The Persyn Family

Brooke and husband Cody currently have one child who is in kindergarten at OFE and one future Bobcat.

"We love that we have quality public education in our very own neighborhood," said Brooke, who notes that the school's strengths are its administration, staff, and especially the teachers.

She said she joined the PTA to help support her child's education, and the continued success of OFE.

"I know we had a PTA [growing up], but it was not even close to being the organization that the OFE PTA is," she said.

The Barron Family

Beth Barron has one daughter in 3rd grade. She is impressed with OFE's teachers and administration.

"They are forward thinking and instill this in our children," Beth says.

She is proud of all the things that the PTA does, like the triathlon

"I want my daughter to be a well-rounded person and our school and the PTA are helping make that happen," Beth says.

Beth joined the PTA to support all the great things the school does.

"Membership helps insure there are the funds and commitment to get great things done," she says.

Box Tops for Education
By Maureen Marcon and Cara Ramelow
2014-2015 Box Tops Committee Chairs

Bobcats, thanks so much for collecting Box Tops! It's the beginning of April so that means just a few more weeks to submit Box Tops for the Box Tops Party. The class that submits the most box tops by April 30, 2015 wins an ice cream party. As of the beginning of April, the five classrooms with the most box tops are Ms. Ficke, Mr. Church, Ms. Valdez, Ms. Lemoine and Ms. Llamo. Any class can pull ahead and win the party so collect all you can! Box Tops can be dropped off in the basket at the front entrance of Oak Forest or submitted to your teacher. So far this year, Bobcats have collected 18,240 box tops! Keep collecting. And don't forget to include your name and classroom with your box tops so your class gets credit!

Congratulations to Kirin Bunge and Olivia Cardenas who are the winners of the monthly drawing for a free ice cream. For every 10 box tops you submit, you are entered into the monthly drawing.

The following Bobcats collected Box Tops during February and received a prize just for submitting! An special thanks to  Tyerra Osborne  who submitted over 100 in March.
