Letter from Principal Thomas
By Jenny Thomas
Principal, OFE

We're Lovin' Lit!

You may have heard, our district and our school are embracing an exciting literacy initiative this year. As always, we are very focused on strategies that help students become good readers by meeting them where they are and growing them. This year we are implementing some new practices and structures to accomplish our reading goals. Our reading teachers support their readers by using a practice called Guided Reading or by establishing Literature Circles. At the heart of both of these practices is the idea that we provide students multiple opportunities to read and respond to text that is at the perfect level for them to read independently. The teacher provides support for small groups of readers as they learn to use various strategies. If you have not already seen information regarding your child's reading level, please contact your teacher. I encourage you to help your child set goals for reading improvement so that you can celebrate success as they grow. Remember, one of the most important things you can do to support your child in school is to read with them. The ultimate goal of reading is to comprehend, so when you think you're done, you've really just begun. Ask your child to tell you about what they read and what they thought about it.  Happy reading!

Children's Author Speaks to OFE students about bullying
from The Leader News

Author and illustrator Kathryn Otoshi had the full attention of Oak Forest Elementary School students this week when she talked about a new student she'd had in her class back when she was in fourth grade. Otoshi told the students that she was taken with Ming because "she looked like me."

But Ming was not born in the U.S. and was still learning the language. She brought different things for lunch. These differences caused some of Otoshi's classmates to target Ming. They pushed her and pulled her hair. Ming cried the first day of school and then started hiding in a locked bathroom stall during lunch. Otoshi said that her last memory of Ming was of her crouching down behind the woodshed being ridiculed by a ring of kids.

The memory stuck with Otoshi because although she knew the way Ming was being treated was wrong, she didn't intervene. It also was part of the impetus for her 2008 anti-bullying book ONE, winner of the E.B. White Read Aloud Honor Book, which talks about acceptance, tolerance, and being that one person who can make a difference. Another book, ZERO, talks about finding and appreciating the value in yourself and others.

Otoshi read both books to Oak Forest students in four different sessions as part of her author visit. The children's book author and illustrator, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, scored some brownie points with students at the beginning of her presentation when she told them she'd worked for both Disney and for George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic. Among other jobs, Otoshi helped design the game pieces for the movie Jumanji as well as Jim Carrey's tombstone (as Scrooge) in A Christmas Carol.

She likened the creation of a children's book to being the director of a film. "All the characters are moving around and I'm the director," she said. "When you turn the page, it's a cut from the scene." Otoshi also told the students that although the book seems simple, it took her a long time to get ONE just right.

Oak Forest Guidance Counselor Jennifer Brown uses Otoshi's books in her work and was excited to have the opportunity to bring her to the school which is a No Place for Hate campus. No Place for Hate is an initiative of the Anti-Defamation League which promotes respect of self and others and includes education about how kids can be upstanders and allies for others.

"I think her message is one that kids of all ages can relate to and understand," said Brown. "All of her books reinforce the values that we are constantly working on instilling in our students and ourselves. I heard her speak to a group of educators last year and literally got the chills. She did an amazing job of differentiating her message to the different grade levels."

Otoshi, who speaks about her books all over the country as well as abroad, said that she thrives off the interaction and the reaction of students. She's also honed her presentation over time.  "I started to incorporate more activity," she said. "It's a link between asking them to be a ONE and having them physically feel it. I really enjoy the dialog between me and the kids."

Easy "Healthy Kids" Breakfast

It is a challenge to get kids to eat healthy with everyone's busy schedule. Protein in the morning meal is a good way to set kids up for a successful day of learning and fun.

Kids need to eat breakfast to fuel their bodies for the day ahead. Eating carbohydrates in the morning provides glucose to get the brain going, but carbs alone result in a drop in blood sugar long before lunch time. Including protein in kids' breakfasts slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and keeps blood sugar levels steady throughout the morning. Eggs, yogurt, cheese, meat and nuts all provide kids with quick, tasty sources of protein for breakfast (Protein in a Breakfast for Children by Alissa Pond Mentzer, Demand Media).

Below is a recipe adapted from a stay at First Street Garden Inn located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast that included these delicious pancakes. I did not recognize the texture so I inquired about the ingredients. The proprietress gladly shared her recipe with me. She commented that her son loved maple syrup when he was growing up and she wanted him to have protein at breakfast to get his day started off right. It was a win win situation! I make these on a regular basis for my daughter and she loves them.

1 3/4 cup part skim ricotta cheese

4 eggs

1/4 cup whole wheat flour

Frozen or fresh blueberries

Combine first three ingredients in a blender and process at high speed. Lightly butter a frying pan and adjust to medium heat. Pour the batter onto the heated surface to form small pancakes. Cook slowly, these pancakes can tend to crumble if they are not formed fully before flipping them. As the pancakes cook and form bubbles on top, add the blueberries to the surface of the pancake. Once the pancake is nearly cooked, flip and cook on the opposite side. Serve warm with maple syrup, fruit juice sweetened jelly or
by itself. These can be made ahead and reheated in the microwave.

Makes 12 small pancakes

OFE Program Spotlight: Cheerleading

Three years ago OFE parent Michelle Hitt went to Principal Jenny Thomas to see about getting a cheerleading club started. "I started it for my daughter and because I absolutely LOVE cheerleading," she says. "I started cheering and gymnastics at a young age and my dream was to be a professional cheerleader."

Hitt's daughter is in seventh grade now but the club is still going strong. "I'll continue to coach as long as there are girls who want to cheer," says Hitt. "It's very expensive in the gyms and I want anyone to be able to cheer regardless of their parent's finances so I don't charge any coach's fees - the only cost is for the uniforms and I try to keep that on the low end."

The squad practices once a week and performs at various events throughout the year including the Reflections reception, some PTA Association meetings, the Fall Festival and Field Day. "We've been talking about performing in parades so I'm working on that," says Hitt.

There are 25 girls participating this year and they're in the process of learning some new stunts. "I love teaching new skills and watching the girls blossom and grow," she says. "Once shy girls become outgoing and confident, they learn about commitment, teamwork, leadership and the importance of having a positive attitude. There are so many benefits to cheerleading that go beyond physical activity."

Thanks to Michelle, who also happens to be one of the Reflections chairs. The time she volunteers really makes a difference at OFE. For other OFE happenings, see http://www.oakforestpta.com/oak-forest-101/current-happenings/.

PTA Member Spotlight

Kendra Cook and Cheryl Howard are the parents of fourth grader Keegan. When asked about what they like about Oak Forest Elementary, Kendra says, "We have enjoyed the styles of teaching at OFE. They have offered a challenging curriculum with a high level of creative and hands on learning.  We have found all our teachers eager to engage Keegan to explore learning." Both parents consider the dedication of the teachers as OFE's "greatest" strength.

"Being a PTA member gives us the opportunity to be informed and exchange ideas," says Kendra. If you haven't become a PTA member, do so today at: http://www.oakforestpta.com/about-pta/join-the-pta/.

Special thanks to Keegan, who is consistently a top seller in the OFE Fall Fundraiser. As we all know, it takes a lot of family support to reach this goal.

Box Tops for Education
By Maureen Marcon and Cara Ramelow
2014-2015 Box Tops Committee Chairs

Let's Go Bobcats! In September we collected 4,500 box tops - that makes 5,428 for the year! Keep collecting because every Box Top you collect goes right back to Oak Forest!

At the end of September Mr. Church's class is in the lead for the ice cream party but his class better keep collecting because Ms. Valdez's and Ms. Ficke's classes are right behind them! We're just starting off the year so there is plenty of time to collect Box Tops for your class!

If you find a Golden Ticket in for the chance to win 100 box tops, please also submit that with the students name on the back and we check to see if you are a winner.  So far we haven't won but hopefully we will have some winning tickets in the future.

Congratulations to Tatum Alex Kelley and Jacob Lopez.  They were the winners of the monthly drawing for a free ice cream cone.   The following Bobcats collected Box Tops during September. Names in bold submitted 100 Box Tops.
