2009 Castano Hecula
(100% Monastrell)
"The 2009 Hecula is 100% Monastrell grown in Jumilla and aged in French and American oak. Expressive aromas of underbrush, brier, mineral, lavender, and blueberry lead to a savory, ripe, nicely proportioned red with excellent volume and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 4-5 years."

It is perhaps the most Mediterranean of varietals, thriving like no other as it basks in that summer sun, yielding deeply flavored wines with layers of dark yet fresh fruit. Known as Mourvedre in France, and Mataro in California - Monastrell (as the Spaniards call it) is a bold varietal whose blackberry and blueberry notes (often with a pinch of baking spices and a dash of aromatic herbs) almost overwhelm the senses. Often it is black as night and sturdy in structure, and even a bit of a beast--and is often tamed by blending with less forceful varietals. Yet in some corners of the wine world some dare to bottle the brute either as the dominant varietal or even on its own. Those that do often succeed by striking a balance between its lively flavors and its powerful structure, crafting powerful yet more refined efforts whose freshness and poise come to the fore; and today's offer the 2009 Castano Hecula - is an excellent example! Broad-shouldered and muscular, yes--but polished as well with its lavender finish. It's a cinch for anything you might serve some lazy Sunday afternoon - or for anything you'll savor that same Sunday evening. A burst of summer in the bottle, today's offer is bold enough to serve with barbecue - and polished enough to enjoy on its own. And it's easy on the wallet as well!
