These Dreams of You

Steve Erickson
thesedreamsofyou

Can't quite believe that so much story fit into this paperback. Loved the little girls voice right off, but then it got better and better. Erickson has moments of saying just the perfect thing. The bizarre combination of "famous" people in the story are such a great touch - couldn't put it down. Paperback
Ten Thousand Saints
Eleanor Henderson

tenthousandsaints
A staff favorite, Ten Thousand Saints is a sweeping debut novel that is a heart-aching tale of the son of diehard hippies and his strange odyssey through the extremes of late 20th century youth culture. Poignant and complex, it brilliantly evokes the grittiness of 1980s NYC. Paperback and Google eBook.

The Empty Family
Colm Toibin

emptyfamilypb
The Empty Family cements Toibin's status as "his generation's most gifted writer of love's complicated, contradictory power." (Los Angeles Times).  Stories set in Ireland, Spain and the US, showcase Toibin's great understanding of human longing.  Paperback and Google eBook.

Blood, Bones and Butter
Gabrielle Hamilton

bloodbones
One of our favorite memoirs now out in paperback.  Hamilton writes so honestly about her life -- an untraditional childhood, the rough adolescence and the searching for the rhythm and meaning in life. She brings us into the foodie world of NYC from the catering mills to her triumph as chef/owner of Prune.

Paperback and Google eBook.

The Patrick Melrose Novels
Edward St. Aubyn

patrickmelrosenovelsThe rave reviews for St. Aubyn's At Last have brought renewed interest to his earlier novels, now all together in this volume dissecting the English upper class.  "Parental death, heroin, childhood rape, emotional frigidity, suicide, alcoholism...nothing about the plots can prepare you for the rich, acerbic comedy of St. Aubyn's world---or more surprising---its philosophical density."---Zadie Smith, Harper's Magazine. Paperback and Google eBook.
Smut

Alan Bennett

smut
Funny, compassionate, and surprising stories about sex and secrets - about who we are and who we pretend to be - from the author of our favorite The Uncommon Reader.  A delightful romp.
Paperback
Hot Art
Joshua Kelman
hotart

"Hot Art creeps up on you. Wickedly entertaining.... Joshua Knelman's in-depth investigation of the international trade in stolen art may read like a TV crime novel, but it delves deeper than that, deftly allowing art theft to serve as an extended metaphor for exploitive, unregulated, free-for-all global capitalism."
-Literary Review of Canada
Paperback
The Story of Beautiful Girl
Rachel Simon

storyofbeautifulgirl1968.  A developmentally disabled white woman and a deaf black man escape from an institution and ring the doorbell of a farmhouse.  They hand over their newborn child to the elderly widow. "Hide her."  A 40-year love story unfolds, and more, a story about freedom, respect, shelter, education and beauty.
Paperback and  Google eBook.
