Five Tips on How to Show and Not Tell

One of the most common problems we have found when working with fiction writers is an issue with telling and not showing. To improve on these problems, authors may find the following tips helpful. The more an author works on these, the more they will grow.

1) Use dialogue to help with characterization and provide characters' emotions through their words.
2) Write about WHY your characters are doing the things they are doing.
3) Build mood through action.
4) Use sensory language. Readers need to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch the world you create!
5. Use adjectives and adverbs to convey emotions, meaning, and motivation.

Thank you to Sam Gefner for your kind words!

It should make my next draft much easier to complete.  I am motivated to follow his very valuable suggestions and begin my rewrite." - Sam Gefner, author of Max and Goldie: A Diary of Love
