Spring Competition Trip
IMPORTANT UPDATE

Trip planning is progressing and it's very exciting. The airline tickets have been purchased, hotel rooms have been reserved and we are on our way to LA!  Ms. Trimble and Mrs. Siegfried extend a resounding Thank You! for the tremendous support for this monumental endeavor and rewarding experience for the music program. We look forward to bringing home the Gold.

With progress comes a mountain of administrative work...please take note of the following items necessary to the successful planning and progress of our competition trip.

  • November 15 - The 2nd payment of $350 is due for those who have not paid their full trip cost fee. For all trip payments, please write in the memo of the check "student name - LA Trip".  For example: John Q. Treble - LA Trip. This is extremely important so that the payment can be recorded accurately.
  •  18 seats remaining!! Parents or guardians of music or Tri-M students can travel with us and we have 18 seats remaining. Cost is $1400 per adult for single room and $1350 for double occupancy. If you want to go, please send in $700 by Nov. 15. Write in memo section of check/money order name - LA Trip (i.e. Jane B. Parent - LA Trip).
  • URGENT: Airline Ticket Information. We need the official name (name on Paul VI student identification card or driver's license or passport) and birthdate (MM/DD/YYYY) for every student and adult traveling. Our airline tickets have been purchased, YAY!! We must turn in a travel manifest by December 15, 2013 with travelers' information and this data must match when checking in for departure flight. Kathleen Slotten will visit music classes to obtain this information from students, please make sure your child provides accurate information. Audrey Wiggins will email all adult travelers to solicit this information.
  • VIRTUS Certification for ALL chaperones. Reminder to all potential chaperones. You must be VIRTUS cleared and submit paperwork for background check in order to travel to Anaheim/Los Angeles with the group as a chaperone. If you have not attended the training, please visit www.virtus.org to sign-up. Additionally, please return the background investigation paperwork to Ann Cordes as one packet with original signatures by December 1, 2013. Please email Audrey Wiggins at pvimusicboosters@gmail.comwith the date you are registered for Virtus training.

Thank you for your prompt attention to all these administrative issues and for your continued support!

Kathleen Slotten, Asst. Trip Coordinator

Music Boosters Oktoberfest Meeting~October 15, 7 PM

Please join us for the next Music Boosters meeting/Oktoberfest, Tuesday, October 15 at 7 PM in the Music Room.  We will be kicking off our next fundraiser, Hams for the Holidays, as well as discussing the spring trip, finances, additional fundraising ideas, spirit wear, upcoming auditions, and other Booster matters.

.

Fundraising Update

The sale of White House ornaments is continuing, thanks to our chairs Jill Meyer and Lori Swanberg.  Remember that the Boosters are selling these ornaments at a fraction of the price of most local retailers and the proceeds are helping to reduce the cost of the spring trip. This beautiful keepsake makes a perfect gift for family, friends, teachers, holiday hostesses and business associates. Orders received by Fridays will be available for students to pick up in the Music Room on the following Tuesdays.  Order forms are available in the Music Room, on our website, or by clicking on this link: White House Ornament Order Form.

The Music Boosters are selling a limited number of handcrafted rosaries, created by PVI band parent Maxine Paulson.  Maxine is generously donating a portion of the purchase price of each rosary to the Music Boosters general fund.  If you've seen these rosaries on display, you already know that each is a unique work of art.  They are available in a variety of colors and styles, and Maxine has also designed a special PVI "black and gold" version that would make a wonderful gift for a special teacher or graduating senior. Rosaries will be available for purchase at all Boosters events and meetings or by contacting pvimusicboosters@gmail.com.

We will be kicking off our Hams for the Holidays fundraiser next Tuesday at the Boosters meeting, thanks to our chairperson Helen Sullivan.  Anyone who tasted the ham, turkey and rum cake samples at the August Boosters meeting knows that these are worth every penny.  All the details will be available on our website and in the next Banter.

The Sweet Sounds of the Fall Showcase Concert

Families, friends, teachers and fellow students were treated to an outstanding performance last Tuesday evening as all of our ensembles presented this year's Fall Showcase Concert. Congratulations and many thanks to the hard-working performers and especially to Mrs. Siegfried, Ms. Trimble and Mr. Morton.

The Boosters would also like to thank all the parents who contributed to the success of this year's first concert, with special thanks to Kelly Rowell for creating the programs, Amber Dise for photography, Jim Barrett and Jeanie Bieniek for videography, and Jim and Kathy Rohr for organizing the reception.  We also appreciate everyone who provided food, drinks and helping hands at the reception.

PVI Music Boosters now on Snapfish

The Music Boosters now have a group page on Snapfish for all our photos and videos.  You can access our site at the following address: http://pvimusicboosters.snapfish.com/snapfish/otsc=SYE/otsi=WCR

We are asking everyone (students too!) who takes photos this year to please consider uploading them to the Snapfish site so that everyone can enjoy them. There is a Snapfish smartphone app as well.  The photos from the Fall Showcase concert are already posted.

Notes from the Board...

Our experiment with using Sign-Up Genius for the post-concert reception was a resounding success.  Thanks to everyone for quickly filling all available slots. We had a wide variety of snacks and plenty of helping hands, so we will continue to use this process for all remaining concerts this year.

Please stop by the Music Room next Tuesday, 10/15 for the next Boosters meeting. Our theme is Oktoberfest and we are very excited to be kicking off our next fundraiser, Hams for the Holidays.  Mrs. Siegfried, Ms. Trimble and the Board will be available to answer any questions about the trip, upcoming events, fundraising, etc.

Please be sure to read the above information about the Anaheim trip.  We are only five months away, and there are many administrative and financial issues that must be completed within the next several weeks.  The next payment is due November 15 and we need to make sure we collect correct name information for the airline tickets. Anyone with any questions about the trip, please contact Audrey Wiggins at pvimusicboosters@gmail.com.

Our volunteer response continues to be phenomenal.  We are so fortunate to have such involved families...you are making all the difference!  Please watch for new opportunities being posted in October and November...we will be looking for parents who are good at organization and/or good with a saw :). Please visit our Sign-Up Genius page: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4AA5AA2DA02-volunteer

Speaking of volunteers, we would like to extend a special shout out to the parents who have been helping to staff the Music Boosters table at the home football games. We have been fortunate to have had beautiful weather at each game thus far, as well as lots of laughs and some holiday cheer.  We've enjoyed the pep band and the black out, neon out and last week's pink out! There are only two games left...please stop by!

Instrumental News from Mrs. Siegfried

The Inova Fairfax Hospital Board has invited the Jazz Band back to perform on Nov. 16th.  Pencil this in the calendar at this point - Details to follow.

Lessons:   Private lesson instructors setting up at PVI after school!

Everyone can use a helping hand and our young musicians are no exception.  Whether lessons are to help a student overcome those dreaded habits that can creep into each one's playing, or to vigorously prepare on for the upcoming January District auditions, taking private lessons is one of the best investments you can make for your student.  Modelling patience, introspection, perseverance and a fun approach, these professional teach time-honored methods (and a few tricks) to instill a habit of excellence in these young people.  Long-term life lessons are the end-product of this mentorship, whether the student sticks with music or uses this right-brain development toward other goals.

And having private instructors travel here weekly is an opportunity that not all music programs enjoy.  Fee is kept low at $30 per half hour and is handled between instructor and parents.  All private lesson instructors at PVI are VIRTUS-qualified and have completed security paperwork.

Trumpet instructor Bill Siegfried is teaching Wednesday afternoons. Due to graduated seniors, he has a couple more slots open for students playing trumpet, french horn, baritone, trombone or tuba.  Interested parents should e-mail Mr. Siegfried at siegtrmpt@aol.com with the header  "lessons for my PVI student"

Air Force Band Senior Clarinetist Dr. Brian McCurdy will begin teaching private clarinet and bass clarinet lessons here late October on Thursday afternoons.  Interested parents should contact Mrs. Siegfried to reserve a time slot. jsiegfried@paulvi.net

Mrs. Siegfried is actively seeking highly-qualified professionals on flute, trombone, sax, and cello to begin teaching here in the building as well.

The Army Ten Miler is Almost Here!

Attention all Band Members...the countdown continues until you travel to downtown DC to perform for the 30,000 runners registered for the 29th running of the Army 10-Miler.  This year's run is scheduled for Sunday, October 20th.  Report time is 6 AM.  We will be returning around 11 AM.  Be sure to get those permission forms turned in.

Parents...if you have never attended this event, it is one of the most popular and inspiring events of the year.  Please visit Sign-Up Genius if you would like to help out!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4AA5AA2DA02-volunteer.

For more information about this event, please visit http://www.armytenmiler.com/.

Choral News from Ms. Trimble

Thanks to our choral students and families who participated in and attended the Mass at St. Thomas More Cathedral this past Sunday afternoon.  The Mass was very meaningful and our singers contributed greatly to the beauty of the Mass.

Auditions for All-District Chorus take place on Saturday, November 9 at Centreville High School, time to be determined.  This audition event is required for all Honors Chamber Choir students and highly recommended for Concert Choir students.  Students who are selected will participate in the All-District event February 13-15.  A packet of information and forms have been sent home with students.  Please contact Ms. Trimble with additional questions.

We need choral students to staff the table at the home football games this season as the Pep Band students are otherwise engaged.  Help is needed selling White House Christmas Ornaments and offering Music Booster Sponsorships.  We only need you for half the game, so you will still be able to socialize.  Please meet the parent volunteers at the Music Boosters Table at the game, 15 minutes before kickoff.
