Borderlands Ahead of the Curve, Producing Plays by Women

Kathleen Allen's article, 'Plays by women get scant attention by Tucson theaters' brings some shocking--but important--facts to our attention.

The numbers are in. Statistically, women make up the majority of theater audiences, but the minority when it comes to writing and producing plays. Borderlands Theater strives to change these statistics (at least in Tucson), doing so by producing plays written by local and national female playwrights.

Although the percent of main-stage productions written by women in Tucson is considerably below the national average (less than 10%), Borderlands trumps this statistic with a whopping 58% of their productions being written by women.

Gnawing the Bone

SheworXX is an evolving community of Tucson-based theatre-makers- playwrights, directors, actors, dramaturgs, designers and others- building gender parity in theatre locally and globally through civic engagement, mentoring, peer education and the productions of works by female identified and feminist playwrights. As an emerging arts organization, SheworXX is being incubated at the YWCA of Tucson, AZ, the perfect host for a feminist theatre collective.

Short plays by seven member playwrights will be presented across the entire campus of the YWCA of Tucson, AZ. Audiences will move through the show, taking in each of the short performances in its own unique  environment. SheworXX artists are working collaboratively and with fierce commitment to create a unique theatrical experience, both in form and content.
