Barrio Stories Launches
Last weekend, project playwrights Virginia Grise, Elaine Romero and Martin Zimmerman, anthropologist Darlene Villaca�a, historian Lydia Otero, Project Coordinator Milta Ortiz and Project Director Marc David Pinate convened over two days to launch the development phase of the Barrio Stories project. The team set out on a tour - led by historian, Dr. Lydia Otero - of the Tucson Convention Center grounds and La Placita area, which used to be part of Barrio Viejo. Dr. Otero authored the book La Calle, which has become the foundation for the project. Many lively discussions around the form of the play and the goals of the project in relation to place and audience took place. Our emphasis on reclaiming place and bringing attention to the rich history of Tucson's Barrio Viejo continue to be our guiding principle. Community member Cecilia Hunter, also came to share her first hand memories of the area providing the team with rich context and inspiration. The Theatricalizing Oral Histories class at Pima College is underway. Nine young ladies have been selected to be part of the project. They understand the importance of their work, as they go into the field with UA ethnographer, Darlene Villaca�a, to interview community members. The interviews will be transcribed and will be used by the students to write and perform monologues back to the community � la Anna Deveare Smith in the first phase of Barrio Stories. Then the transcriptions will be utilized by the playwrights as source material in Phase 2 to write a site specific theatrical event, which will take place in the Spring of 2016. Producing Director in Ajo
Ajo Memory Project Phase 2: Redemptive Remembering
Borderlands Theater is honored to conduct an interdisciplinary, site specific performance based on oral histories of Ajo residents. This will take place during the week-long gathering of artists hosted by the International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA) in Ajo, Arizona, March 14 - 18, 2015. Borderlands Producing Director, Marc David Pinate, will work with local musician, Ted Warmbrand, and the members of Ajo's Nano Players theatre troupe for a five day residency. Video and transcripts of interviews from local residents conducted during the first phase of the Ajo Memory Project in 2010 led by anthropologist, Maribel Alvarez, will be used along with music and movement to devise a performance piece honoring the oral histories of Ajo's citizens.
