Autumn F&J is live!

The autumn issue of MME's quarterly newsletter, F&J, is now online and available here. The theme for this edition is the National Marine Life Center. Featured is information on how the Center responds to strandings in the Buzzards Bay area, as well as info on what you can to do if you encounter a stranded animal.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

Advanced Drifter Workshop -  A series of events is planned for this autumn for teachers who have built and delayed ocean drifters or who plan to in the near future. Participants will learn how to process data with simple Python code, overlay other oceanographic data, compare observed tracks with model-derived tracks, and collectively contribute lesson plans for the benefit of others in the future. 2017 Bow Seat Competitions are Open  - There are two programs this year: 1) Bow Seat's annual Ocean Awareness Student Contest with the theme of "Ocean Pollution: Challenges & Solutions", and 2) the new  Marine Debris Creative Advocacy Competition, which  challenges middle and high school students to implement real-world projects in their schools and communities. Citizen Science for Classroom Teachers - Join the Museum Institute for Teaching Science, Brandeis University, the Encyclopedia of Life, and the USA National Phenology Network for an exciting hybrid online/in-person course designed to help educators design standards-based learning outcomes that engage students in meaningful citizen science. The online portion of the course runs September 26 - October 28, and the in-person meeting is October 15. Click here for more information.

2016 Ocean Literacy Summit - Save the date for the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative's biennial OL Summit which will be held November 3-4, 2016 on the working waterfront in Portland, Maine. This event  will focus on the latest research and education activities surrounding Ocean Literacy Principle #3: "The ocean is a major influence on weather in climate." Soak Up the Rain Webinar - October 6th from 3:00-4:30pm, this focuses on m aking connections with teachers and students on green infrastructure. Presenters include Peter Coffin (Blackstone Headwaters Coalition and the Blackstone River Coalition) Peter Hinrichs (Learning Prep School, Newton), and  Molly Allard (Northern Rhode Island Conservation District and  the Scituate Reservoir Watershed Education Program.)  Click here for more information.
