It's Boyne Thunder weekend; See boats tonight at Stroll the Streets, Saturday on the lake

Bigger than ever, the 12th annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run brings speed, thunder, and excitement to Northern Michigan on July 10 and 11 in Boyne City. The poker run event showcases 110 high performance boats from all over the country racing through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 130-mile excursion in search of the best poker hand.

> The Poker Run begins with line-ups at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and a series of parade laps starting at 10, leaving from the Boyne City Marina. Veterans Park offers some of the best views for spectators. Card stops include Northport, Elk Rapids, Harbor Springs, Bay Harbor, with a lunch stop in downtown Charlevoix. Boaters wrap up their day on the water with a final card stop near Horton Bay and a reception at Sommerset Pointe. The day concludes with a dinner and auction at Veterans Park where participants play their cards to see who has the best hand. In addition to the Poker Run, the weekend offers activities galore in Boyne City, including a Friday night dinner for the boaters at the Veterans Park Pavilion and Stroll The Streets from 6 to 10 p.m. in downtown Boyne City. The streets are closed to bring incredible displays of Boyne Thunder powerboats and classic cars for people to see up close, with music on every street corner. (Stroll details below.)

Community Heroes Week at Boyne District Library

This year's theme for summer reading at the Boyne District Library is "Every hero has a story." Not all heroes wear capes. This week was Community Heroes Week for the Summer Reading Clubs at the Boyne District Library. We had many local heroes join us as guest readers: Officer Kyle Smith from the Boyne City Police Department, Lisa Howie from the Boyne City Transportation Department, Bill McMillian, a former member of the U.S. Navy, Boyne City Police Chief Jeff Gaither, and Boyne City Fire Chief Dennis Amesbury, who is pictured above. We read stories about brave heroes and true friends who help others in their communities, we started a list of real-life heroes in our community, and we learned how we can use our helping powers here in Boyne City by bringing in donations for the Boyne City Food Pantry. A big thank you to all of our heroes.

Wednesday Gazebo concert features Full Circle classic rock band

Next Wednesday's Evenings at the Gazebo concert will feature Full Circle, a local classic rock band formed in 1969. Although each band member has been involved in many different projects (and other careers) over the years, two original members (Nick Lilak and John Slough) are still leading the current line-up. In 2006, they convinced Roger Lilak to join the band on bass guitar/vocals. During the past few years, the Full Circle has added local percussionist Graham Fineout for most shows. Full Circle's primary musical focus is classic rock or "nostalgia rock" from the late 60's through the 80's. During their shows, the Full Circle plays a wide variety of popular tunes while always keeping vocal harmonies at the forefront. Click here to listen to three of their songs - 'Mustang Sally,' "Best of My Love," and "Please Please Me."

The Boyne Area Chamber produces the weekly concerts, which are made possible by support from the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and other business and individual sponsors. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets  and perhaps a bottle of wine. Thick 'N' Juicy Diner brings their food cart, offering hot dogs and bratwurst at the concerts. For more information call the Chamber at 231-582-6222 or visit www.gazeboconcerts.com   Print the schedule (PDF)

Robin Lee Berry

Robin Lee Berry writes theme song for documentary, will perform at Hemingway Birthday Celebration

The Perry Hotel is hosting its first Hemingway Birthday Celebration in Petoskey on Tuesday, July 21, to benefit the local production of a new documentary about Ernest Hemingway's early life in Northern Michigan. Boyne City singer-songwriter Robin Lee Berry wrote the theme song, "Horton's Creek and Windemere" for the documentary. She will be performing that song and others at the celebration. The event begins with a 6 p.m. social hour followed by dinner and a preview screening of scenes from "Young Hemingway: Finding His Muse in Northern Michigan." The documentary is being written and produced by Walloon Lake resident George Colburn and a production team that features the talents of many local residents. The film has just finished its "principal photography" phase, Colburn said, "and we want to share some of the footage with our friends and neighbors." "It was an easy decision to host the preview at Stafford's," Colburn said, "because of its location in city center where Hemingway spent a great deal of time - socializing with friends, gathering ideas for his early Nick Adams short stories, and fine-tuning his writing." And, he noted, Hemingway stayed at the hotel on occasion; you can find his name in the registry.

> Tickets are $50 plus tax for a five-course Hemingway-inspired dinner. For reservations, call Stafford's Perry Hotel at 231-347-4000.

Dianna Stampfler
Library presents "Michigan Ghost Towns"

The Boyne District Library presents a program on Michigan ghost towns at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 at 6:30 in the library's community room. Did you know that hundreds of ghost towns dot Michigan's landscape through both the lower and upper peninsulas? Some even still appear on state highway maps. Originally centered in logging, farming and mining areas, these towns often faded into history when the natural resources were depleted. Only a handful remain standing, silent and abandoned, as a reminder of what once was. Settle in for an historic tour through Michigan's past as you visit the ghost towns of the great lakes state. Presenter Dianna Stampfler has been doing lively and upbeat programs about historic lighthouses, ghost towns, islands and other unique destinations in Michigan since 1997. Her programs on Michigan's ghost towns has proven to be one of her favorites.
