 Take It Outside

Winter may be still have a last grip on us, but remember that spring activities are just a couple of weeks away.  Time to dust off those hiking boots, fill the backpack with essentials, and hit the trails!  The Bragg Creek area has a world class network of trails, suitable for all ages and difficulties.  Get the latest map (weather proof, scuff proof) and suit up for all the different weather the Alberta skies can hurl at us!

On the way, watch out for moose nibbling new willow shoots, vigorous bird activity, and bears recently emerged from denning.  Fact!  Bears don't hibernate; their denning period is like hibernation but their metabolism and body temperature is not significantly reduced.  At this time of year be bear aware: make noise, bring bear spray and know how to react

Grizzly or Black Bear

Did you know that colour is not a good indicator?  And even though we think grizzlies are always bigger, this isn't always the case.  The best way to tell the difference is shoulder and face shape.  Grizzlies have a pronounced shoulder hump and concave face profile. Click here for more.

Hiking: What To Bring

Prepare for the unexpected!

  • Map & compass
  • Water
  • Bear spray/bells/noise makers
  • High-energy snacks
  • First-aid kit
  • Toilet paper
  • Layered clothes
  • Rain gear

Perfect Snack for Hiking!

Why sacrifice taste while in the mountains?  The perfect accompaniment to the clean scent of pines and fresh air. For 4 greedy people, as part of a meal:

Ingredients:

  • 1 large can chick peas
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • clove garlic, crushed
  • 1/3 cup good olive oil
  • teaspoon ground cumin
  • teaspoon ground sweet paprika
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lightly toasted pine nuts (optional)
  • Pita bread and/or fresh veggies to serve

Method:

Strain the chick peas, reserving 1 cup liquid.  Dump everything except s & p, pine nuts and pita into a blender or other magical mixing machine.  Smash until smooth.  Taste.  Add reserved chick pea liquid to make it unctuously scoopable.  Whizz again.  Taste.  Add s & p until flavoursome.  Pack in plastic box with secure lid. Top with toasted pine nuts.  Pack pita and/or veggies for dipping separately.  Reveal on mountain top, to everyone's amazement.  (Alternate ending: hoot with laughter at those merely enjoying so called energy bars).

Homemade Pita Chips

The perfect foil to the perfect dip

Ingredients:

  • 6 whole pitas, cut into chip-sized wedges
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Line two cookie sheets with foil.

2. In a large bowl, toss together the pita chips, olive oil, and salt. Spread into a single layer onto each sheet (none should overlap). Bake 12-15 minutes or until crispy. Cool completely then store in an airtight container.

 Bragg Creek WildlifeGreetingsCommerce

Did you know the Bragg Creek area has two kinds of deer?  Try these questions when you see deer:

  • Is the face mostly white from nose to eyes? Answer: Mule deer
  • Are there just white rings around the eyes?  Answer: Whitetail deer
  • Check out the...ahem...backside: is it mainly white?  Tricky one!  Mule deer have a very large white patch with a thin tail tipped with black or brown.  Whitetail have a narrow white patch with a thick dark tail, that can be raised to show a startling white brush when alarmed.

Michael Kaeshammer at Bragg Centre

Michael Kaeshammer's performances are an invitation to join the party. He doesn't play at you. He plays with you. At his shows, you're all in it together - not only part of the story, but virtually part of the band. When Michael steps on stage he'll greet you warmly, as an honoured guest. He'll play a song like 'Rendezvous'. A comfortable start, to showcase his fiery piano chops and make you feel at home - The equivalent of taking your coat and hat and showing you around the place.

As you settle in and he'll introduce you around - First to his longtime rhythm section, drummer Mark McLean then bassist Marc Rogers, who'll rip it up with him on a tune dictated as much by his mood as by what direction he believes you and his other guests would like the party to head in. Getting there is more than half the fun. More Info.

Tickets: Adults $40. Seniors $38. Youth (6-17) $30

Water Forum with Bob Sandford

Sustainable Redwood is excited to partner with the Elbow River Watershed Partnership (www.erwp.org ) to create an afternoon of learning about the state of our local water systems. Bob Sandford is the EPCOR Chair of the Canadian Partnership Initiative in support of United Nations "Water for Life" Decade. He is also the Director of the Western Watersheds Research Collaborative, an associate of the Centre for Hydrology and a Fellow of the Biogeoscience Institute at the University of Calgary.
