Why is Johnny So Unmotivated To Do His Best in School?

Are some kids just plain lazy when it comes to school work? It would certainly seem that way given the reality of homework assignments forgotten about, last ditch efforts that involve minimal effort at best, or grades that don't reflect how smart and capable they are.

Just as coaches win games, the skill of coaching oneself earns success. Brain research has enabled us to understand that self-coaching is dependent on a constellation of sub-skills known as executive function skills. These cognitive functions are located in the prefrontal cortex and are what enable us to meet challenges and accomplish goals. More specifically, they allow us to organize our behavior over time, help us to decide what activities or tasks we will pay attention to, and override immediate demands in favor of longer term goals. Through the use of executive function skills we can plan and organize activities, sustain attention, and persist to complete a task. Simply stated, these skills enable us to regulate our behavior.
