Summer Bridge
As spring gives way to summer, you might start looking for ways to avoid the warm weather. What better way to escape the heat than with some cool bridge competition?
One option is to play in NAP qualifying games at local clubs throughout July and August. You can check that item off your to-do list and be ready for the NAP District Finals in October. Check with the club managers to identify which games count as NAP qualifiers.
Don't forget about the Unit STaC, taking place the week of July 11-17. Non-life masters seeking silver points can earn them at local clubs. Life masters can enjoy the thrill of color point competition and the challenge of earning bonus points for high-scoring games.
Start planning for the Valley Forge Regional, which takes place in August. Please note the new location at the Dolce Valley Forge Hotel. (You can link to the hotel site here.) The event will be here before you know it.
For those of you headed to Toronto for the Summer Nationals, we look forward to seeing you there. The August newsletter will include reports on the successes of Unit 141 players at the Summer NABC.

Table Tips: How to Lead
The bidding at your table has ended and it's time to lead. The hard part is choosing the right card to pull from your hand, but there are actually procedural issues too. While the few tips below won't help you make the correct lead, they should help you lead correctly.
1. Lead in a timely way. If you are on lead, make selecting a card the top priority. Delay writing down the contract, inputting scores in a bridgemate, or taking care of any other tasks until after you lead. You are entitled to thinking time, but the other chores can wait. The players at the table, including your partner, are waiting for you; lead so they can begin studying it and the dummy.
2. Lead with the card face down. There are two key reasons to lead with the card face down. One is that it gives your partner a chance to ask questions about the bidding. The other is to prevent you from leading out of turn. If you "try" to lead out of turn and the card is face down, you still have a chance to correct the error. If the card is face up, however, it's too late. You cannot correct the error and are subject to penalties.
3. Know that a face-down lead may not be changed. It is important to know that a face-down lead cannot be changed (except when the Director rules that the lead can be changed because of misinformation). If you table a card and then take it back, you can be subject to a procedural penalty, so ask all of your questions about the bidding before you table a card. After you lead, you can query your partner, "Any questions?" You cannot change the lead, however, based on the answers.
Readers who are interested in reading about which card to lead, can check out these links to eddiekantar.com and bridgewinners.com.
