Bridging the Gap in STEM Studies: Females vs. Males

Dear EIF friend, supporter, scholar & partner,

There is a science to helping students become successful in the classroom. Not to be cliche, but some research suggests there is evidence that there are differences between how to help girls learn and achieve versus how to help boys.

Digging a little deeper  to understand what is going on in STEM studies specifically, we find that even though females are capable, their abilities in math and science classes do not predict whether they will go into related careers. Lisa Wade, associate professor and chairwoman of the sociology department at Occidental College in Los Angeles who frequently writes on this topic says, "many high-performing girls choose not to (go into STEM careers), and many lower-performing boys do. This is partly because women are pushed out of such careers because they are so strongly associated with men and masculinity or because they encounter hostility, but it's also because they are pulled out: women strongly out-perform boys in skills related to other types of careers, so sometimes they choose those instead."

While all the various theories and the current facts are interesting, the real question is what exactly causes the gender gap in STEM studies and educational achievement? To learn more, visit our website: www.educationisfreedom.org

Sincerely,

Marcia Page

Deloitte and EIF: Making an Impact
Deloitte volunteers work one-on-one with students on scholarships
Despite the adverse weather conditions, Deloitte volunteers arrived at W.W. Samuell and Lincoln high school ready to make a difference. Volunteers assisted students with their Fairway to Success scholarship. The Fairway to Success program introduces students to golf. Seniors participating in the program are offered the opportunity to apply for this competitive $20,000 scholarship. The advice that Deloitte volunteers offered to these eager applicants will not only motivate them to successfully complete the scholarship application by the March 7th deadline, but will help them in future scholarship applications as well.  Thank you Deloitte for your continued support!
EIF Advisor Spotlight
Working with high school students is challenging, but what often makes a difference in their life is having someone who is relatable, inspiring, and shows genuine concern. Education is Freedom prides itself on providing campus-based  higher education advisors who possess these qualities. Erbin Ayala, advisor at Seagoville High School, embodies the spirit of EIF. Erbin began his career at EIF in June 2012 and expresses the rewards of being an advisor. Erbin states, "without a doubt the interaction with students is my favorite part. Above all, being an agent of change and ultimately shifting the trajectory of young peoples' lives is the best part of my job". He has been successful in guiding his students to their fullest potential and helping them find their future.

Erbin is a first generation university graduate whose parents came as immigrants from Central American during the Guerrilla Civil War in El Salvador. As a Rising Star and Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship recipient, Erbin understands the importance of financial aid when pursuing a college education. Erbin began his post secondary education at Eastfield Community College, a first step he highly recommends to students with financial concerns or who are exploring their options. After completing his core curriculum, he transferred to the University of North Texas where he obtained a bachelor's degree in International Studies with a Spanish minor. Erbin is eager to continue making great progress at Seagoville and declares, "We will meet and exceed all DISD expectations alongside the Seagoville administration this year and I hope we raise the bar for increasing our college-going culture. "

Selena Marroquin
Senior at H. Grady Spruce

Selena Marroquin is the youngest in her family and is determined to be the first to attend college. She has all the qualifications that make her an excellent candidate for college recruiters; she excels academically (taking every AP class that her school offers), participates in extra-curricular activities, is currently the treasurer of her senior class, and was a Mayor's Intern Fellow during the summer at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Despite being an outstanding student, Selena knew that her family would not be able to afford her college tuition and had no idea where to begin the college application and financial aid process. Selena is a recipient of the program and services that Education is Freedom (EIF) provides and states, "My EIF advisor has aided me in my college and scholarship applications...I am so thankful to have someone so dedicated to the students and their future education."

Education is Freedom is there to serve students like Selena who have the talent and drive to pursue post-secondary education but don't have the means to do it. Selena is planning to attend Stephen F. Austin University in the fall of 2015, majoring in Biology with a Pre-Med emphasis.
