The Olympic Games start in London

Millions of people from around the world are watching the Olympic Games in London this month. But we're working to make sure the impact continues long after the athletes have collected their medals. Through International Inspiration, the official sports legacy program of London 2012, the British Council provides access to sport and physical education to 12 million children in 20 countries.

In July, 20 young leaders from the 20 International Inspiration countries were given the opportunity of a lifetime to run with the Olympic Torch. Read what young torchbearers from Turkey and Brazil thought about their experience.

Two thousand of the students who took part in International Inspiration joined their teachers at the Opening Ceremony to greet the Olympic athletes during the Parade of Nations. Check out the blog for a behind-the-scenes look at the Guard of Honour.

Don't have tickets to the Games? Live vicariously through one of our resident bloggers who attended last weekend's equestrian events.

The winners are:

Malcolm K Darrell, who works for Center Theatre Group, a large theatre company with many outreach and school programs in LA

Sabra Williams, who works for The Actors Gang, a theatre led by Tim Robbins that produces thought-provoking, financially accessible work

A Month of Transition

Farewell to USA Country Director Sharon Memis

This month sees the departure of our country director for the past six years, Sharon Memis. Sharon has been an inspirational boss and we wish her all the best in her new role as director of innovation for our EU region, based in Brussels.

Read our 2012 Annual Review to learn more about our recent work under Sharon's leadership.

Our new country director, Paul Smith, arrives in post later this month.

Paul joins us from Kabul, where he led the rebuilding of our Afghanistan mission after a deadly Taliban attack in August 2011. You can read Paul's blog post about the attack in the New York Times.

We look forward to welcoming Paul to the US team.

"It's 1965, and it's New York. This film that we're in is the essence of its time."

And so the scene is set for Gob Squad's Kitchen (You've Never Had It So Good), a witty theatrical production that takes pop art icon Andy Warhol's film Kitchen as its starting point for a journey through underground cinema in 1960s New York.
