A note to my friends:
I can hardly believe that our little store just celebrated 22 years of existence. I'm so proud of that, and also proud to say that so far this fiscal year is our best one ever! We seem to have weathered the rough years, and for the past several years our business has grown steadily and quite dramatically. We are thrilled to have such strong support from all of you. This support is crucial to our continued presence in the community.
This year is one of big changes for me. Near the end of the year, I plan to retire from the store. I have been a bookseller for 44 years, and I am ready to put aside my professional life and spend more time with my family, do some traveling, garden a bit more, volunteer at a few places I love, and read more books. Now is the perfect time for this transition, as my family and I are healthy, and so is the store.
I'm not going away. My plans are to help the store through this change and work occasionally if I can and if they need me. However, my husband has been retired for four years now, and he is tired of having all the fun by himself. Also, we keep adding adventures to our bucket list so we need to get started.
Sally and I want Broadway Books to continue to thrive, and so we are looking for a new partner, or perhaps two partners, to own the store with Sally. We would like to sell 50% of the store to someone (or perhaps two people who would each buy 25%) who is as passionate about this neighborhood, and this neighborhood bookstore, as we are.
I can tell you from my heart that you will find no better partner than Sally. She is a totally professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated bookseller. I have known hundreds of booksellers in the past 44 years, and she is my very favorite one.

Wednesday, July 2, 7 pm: Kristin Ohlson
Portland author Kristin Ohlson will be here to present her recently published book, The Soil Will Save Us: How Scientists, Farmers, and Foodies are Healing the Soil to Save the Planet, published by Rodale.
Centuries of poor farming, ranching, and land practices -- especially modern industrial agriculture -- have led to the loss of 80 billion tons of carbon from the world's soil. That carbon, now floating in the atmosphere, continues to overwarm the planet. In this book, a bestselling journalist makes an elegantly argued, passionate case for "our great green hope" -- the ancient partnership between plants and soil microorganisms that created our planet and could put that carbon back in the ground.

Tuesday, June 8, 7 pm: Barbara J. Scot  Barbara J. Scot will be here to present her most recent book, The Nude Beach Notebook, published by Oregon State University Press. In this engaging new memoir, a loose sequel to her earlier Prairie Reunion, Ms. Scot explores her reluctance and longing to reconnect with a much-loved brother, lost to alcoh olism for thirty years. She uses long, meditative walks on the "clothing optional" beach near her home on the idyllic Sauvie Island to explore family responsibility, time's passage, and faith. She weaves entries from her notebook -- a record of the island's wildlife, descriptions of people she encounters on the beach, and stories about the native people who once lived on the river -- with the main narrative, tracing her search for her brother, her close friendship with a fellow writer, and daily life on the moorage. In The Nude Beach Notebook, the author highlights the importance of place as a means for exploring and interpreting one's own story. In the end, her walks on Sauvie Island lead to her own redemptive journey. Barbara J. Scot is the author of The Violet Shyness of their Eyes: Notes from Nepal, Prairie Reunion, The Stations of Still Creek, and Child of Steens Mountain (with Eileen McVicker). She taught public school for twenty-six years and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal. She lives with her husband in a houseboat on Sauvie Island, near Portland.

Ms. Winspear will be here to present her most recent book, The Care and Management of Lies: A Novel of the Great War. This is a ticketed event.
Jacqueline Winspear is the author of a bestselling mystery series set in the aftermath of World War I and featuring psychologist and private investigator Maisie Dobbs. When the first novel of the series was published in 2003, it won The Agatha Award for Best First Novel, The Macavity Award for Best First Mystery, an Alex Award and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Mysteries of the Year. Nine more books in the series followed, all bestsellers.
Her newest book is once again a historical novel set in the time of WWI, but it is not part of the Maisie Dobbs mystery series. Published to coincide with the centennial of the Great War, The Care and Management of Lies paints a poignant picture of love and friendship strained by the pain of separation and the brutal chaos of battle. Ultimately, it raises profound questions about conflict, belief, and love that echo in our own time.
The passage of time can test any friendship -- changing jobs, moving, choosing a life-partner, and having children -- and life thus often separates people who have once been inseparable. This novel follows the lives and relationship of Kezia Marchant and Thea Brissenden, friends since girlhood, whose relationship is strained by Thea's passionate embrace of women's suffrage and the imminent marriage of Kezia to Thea's brother, Tom, who runs the family farm.

Tuesday, July 22, 7 pm: The Night, and the Rain, and the River
 Local publisher Forest Avenue Press has published an anthology of short stories by Oregon writers, The Night, and the Rain, and the River. Four authors from the book will be here to read from their stories.
A current of longing runs through these stories. As the characters strive for connection, they make mistakes, reach out to the wrong people, and recalibrate their lives based on what they desire, whether or not it is attainable -- or even a good idea. A young woman hands her decisions to a man she's never met; an abandoned father and son struggle to pull a stump from the stubborn ground; the town wailer loses her voice after her mother's death; and a cloudless Oregon sky triggers a trip for a final goodbye.
Editor Liz Prato has curated a powerful collection of smart, funny, sad, exquisite stories about the losses that shape our lives.
