Brooks Lodge

The calendar says July, but here at Brooks Lodge it's our long anticipated spring week - spring cubs, that is. Four sows arrived at Brooks Camp with winter born cubs: 4 cubs, 3 cubs, 2 cubs and a single cub. The small cubs are the rock stars of Katmai with lodge guests and visitors all gathering on the platforms hoping to catch the perfect shot of our newest additions. Cubs are grabbing all the attention this week, while big boars are quietly (and not so quietly) going about their business of feasting upon salmon jumping the falls.

The salmon are pushing strong into the river with Rainbows and Graylings following behind. Many guests choose to spend their days reeling in one salmon after another while other anglers continue fishing their favorite holes with dry flies and are catching large fish, including a Grayling measuring over 18 inches. If you prefer a boat trip, Brooks Lake is hot right now with guided half days bringing in over 15 Rainbows and Lake Trout per trip.

Brooks Lodge and Katmai Air offer flight tours along with bear-viewing and fishing. On a clear day, guests fly above the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and finally have the opportunity to see the full extent of the eruption that created our unique and wonderful national park. Another adventure enjoyed by a few fortunate guests this week was a flight tour to Aniakchak National Monument. This amazing caldera is 6.5 miles wide and 2000 feet deep. Formed approximately 3700 years ago, fewer people have flown through "The Gates" and stood inside the caldera than have been to the summit of Mt. Everest.

Come for the spring cubs, come for the fishing, come for the adventure - whatever your reason, you will find your once-in-a-lifetime moment here at Brooks Lodge.
