I am very excited for the upcoming school year and am happy to see your children here at school. Though our summer passed quickly, I am enjoying all the stories of the many amazing memories you created with them throughout summer break.
Your children are quickly learning their daily schedules and expectations. I know that they will learn by leaps and bounds throughout this school year, and our teachers look forward to sharing all of their progress with you. Please feel free to contact our building at any time if there is something you would like to discuss. I value open lines of communication and feel it is critical to learning.
Please have a wonderful weekend! You may have very sleepy kiddos on your hands. They worked very hard this week and deserve some time to play outside!
Be safe Brown Families.
Kind regards,
Casey Smitherman
Best Buddy Announcement
This year we are starting an elementary level of our district-wide Best Buddies Program. Our Best Buddies program will be a school-level club that facilitates friendships and additional interactions between our special needs students and their peers in general education classes. Best Buddies is a global program that has chapters at both of our middle schools and Brownsburg High School. The success of those programs led to a natural extension at Brown Elementary School.
Students must apply to a member of Best Buddies. Application requires student assent and parent consent and a two paragraph essay explaining why they would be a good fit for the program. Students will participate one time per week in their Best Buddy role. Students may also choose which area(s) they would like to serve.
The three areas include:
1.
Lunch Buddy: Lunch Buddies eat lunch with their assigned peer. This may include helping pick out foods in line, conversation at the lunch table, clean up at the end of lunch, and escorting their buddy on the return trip to their classroom.
2.
Recess Buddy: Recess Buddies may go to and from the playground with their buddy, play with their buddy during recess, and help facilitate friendships with other peers.
3.
Pack Up Buddy: Pack Up Buddies help their buddies organize for the end of the day, wait for the bus with them and escort their buddy to the bus.
4.
Related Arts Buddy: RA Buddies will help their buddies during the life skills special time.
Students may miss a portion of their school day one time per week while serving as a Best Buddy depending on their assignment. The students will be responsible for making up any missed work and turning it in by the following day. We understand depending on weather, homework or testing assignments, or field trips there will be times the students miss the weekly Best Buddy assignment.
If you are interested in serving as a Best Buddy in the 2016-2017 school year, please fill out this form (
Best Buddy Application) and attach a two paragraph essay that answers the following two questions:
Paragraph One: Why do you want to be a Best Buddy at Brown Elementary School?
Paragraph Two: Why do you think you would be a good choice as a Best Buddy?

Hearing Screening Information
Indiana State law requires students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 to have their hearing screened. All kindergarten students and all students new to BCSC will be tested as well. The Brownsburg Speech and Language Pathologists will be conducting hearing screenings at each school.
Students who do not pass their hearing screenings will receive paperwork notifying you of the results. (If your child does not pass their hearing screening, you will be notified of pass/did not pass results when a re-screening is done as well.)
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's hearing.
