Symphony Of The Soil Official Trailer 1 (2013) - Documentary HD
Did, you know that the United Nations has named 2015, the "International Year of Soils".  The health of the soil is a major contributing factor to the quality and quantity of the food that we grow and the health and nutrition of the plants and animals that we eat.  The health of man himself is directly tied to the health of the soil that we depend on.  Watch this two minute movie trailer about soil, it is very compelling!  It is up to each of us to start at home and make our own little piece of the planet healthy.  Start with the soil that your lawn is growing in.  You can improve it organically and dramatically and the benefit to you, beyond a great looking lawn, will be the knowledge that you achieved these great results using less chemical controls.
The basic idea behind the New American Lawn Plan is to manage your lawns natural growing conditions, including the soil, in order to achieve an attractive, healthy lawn while using much less chemical inputs.  You will often see recommendations on various websites and in gardening books that you should have at least four to six inches of top soil to grow an attractive lawn.  If this is the way we plan to grow our lawn, we would need to move an enormous quantity of top soil, at a very considerable expense, requiring a lot of labor!  It is no longer necessary to buy top soil, and move soil around on your property to grow a good lawn!  All soils contain varying degrees of clay, silt, sand, organic matter, air and water.  If the soil contains too much clay, it can become dense and compacted and will drain poorly and stay soggy in a wet spring, but turn rock-hard when dry in the summer.  Soil that contains a high percentage of silt and sand, doesn't hold water and heat-up dramatically, stressing the turfgrass during periods of drought. The organic content in your soil is composed of carbons, which are the decayed and decaying remains of plants and animal life.  The beneficial soil microbes feed on these organic carbons and overtime, deplete them.  Without a food source, the soil microbial activity decreases and the soil compacts.   It is commonly believed that core aeration of the lawn will relieve soil compaction and it will do this temporarily when the soil walls collapse into the core-hole spaces.  This however, is only a very temporary solution and not worth the $75.00 - $150.00 average price paid to have your lawn mechanically core aerated The long term solutions to improving lawn soil health and building new biologically active top soil  require increasing the amount of air and water penetrating more deeply, all the time, into your lawn soil profile.  Also encouraging the beneficial soil building microbes, which do the "heavy lifting" of completing the nutrient cycle in the soil.
There is a new product that does make top soil out the the poor compacted soil you currently are trying to grow a lawn in.  It is called  Love Your Lawn-Love Your Soil.  It is an all-natural and organic product that feeds soil microbes, helps loosen heavy, hard-packed soil and releases trapped nutrients in the soil.  Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil makes your lawn soil more alive and porous allowing air, water, nutrients and grass roots to enter the soil more easily. Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil will increase your lawns resistance to drought and heat stress.  Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil contains humic and fulvic acids, calcium, sulfur, iron and molasses.   How do you replenish the nutrients in the soil? Feed it with Love Your Lawn-Love   Your Soil.  All natural and organic, Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil stimulates soil microbes  and creates a biologically healthy soil.    Environmentally friendly  and safe to use around people and pets. It is a homogeneous formula that applies  easily with any spreader.  The more organic material found in the soil, the greater the number  of microorganisms that can live and thrive creating a healthy environment for the  grass plant to grow and thrive.

Should I be applying crabgrass control?

The common wisdom is that you need to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control early in the spring.  One of the many downsides to following this practice is that it prevents you from being able to seed those damaged areas in your lawn.  Plus most crabgrass seeds do not begin to germinate until the soil temperature, (not the air temperature) reaches a minimum of 55 degress, which is still many weeks away! So why are we putting down a crabgrass control,  whose 12 weeks of  effective control will be cut to 6 weeks of control, by the time the crabgrass plants really begin to grow?  (Important Note: This is why you always have crabgrass in your lawn in August. Delay putting down the crabgrass control and it will kill germinating crabgrass seed right through the summer.)  The solution to this problem is to wait to apply any crabgrass preventers.  Yes, you heard us correctly, we want you to wait and seed your lawn first this spring using our Black Beauty Ultra  grass seed. Once your new grass has been mowed 2-3 times and (if crabgrass has been a problem in the past) then spread our product, Crabgrass Preventer plus Green-Up Lawn Fertilizer .  This product contains the latest technology that controls crabgrass both before AND after it germinates!  Following these steps will allow you to repair your lawn from winter damage and also control crabgrass. When you apply Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil your grass seed will establish faster and your crabgrass control will be more effective because you have improved the soil your lawn grows in.
