"CONSTRUCTION VS CANCER" FESTIVAL OCTOBER 7
A heavy-equipment operator shows a young cancer patient the workings of an excavator at the "Construction vs Cancer" event last year in Phoenix.

SNHBA has joined with industry partners - the Nevada Contractors Association (formerly Associated General Contractors), Associated Builders & Contractors and the Nevada Subcontractors Association - to help launch the first " Construction vs Cancer Las Vegas," an unusual event by the local office of the American Cancer Society to benefit young cancer patients and their families in our community.

The " Construction vs Cancer" festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, October 7 at the Symphony Park, 130 S. City Parkway in Downtown Las Vegas. Childen will be able to sit in and get help to operate construction equipment, such as a backhoe, dozer and excavator. There will be entertainment, food, beverages, kid's activities and games, and photo opportunities with the construction equipment. Admission tickets are $15 for individuals; $50 for a family of four.

Volunteers are needed the day of the event to assist with registration, parking, event set-up, event clean-up, and at various locations, such as the construction equipment stations, the water stations, Kid's Zone stations, food stations, scissor lift activity station and the festival area. If you are interested in volunteering to assist at the event, contact Frank Johnson at [email protected] to register as a volunteer.

SNHBA salutes the many members who are supporting this outstanding effort. We hope to see a strong turnout of members and their families at the festival on October 7 at Symphony Park. Click here for additional information.

HOMEAID SOUTHERN NEVADA UPDATE

More than 150 SNHBA members and special guests attended the Inaugural "Building Hope" Breakfast at Wynn Las Vegas.

Inaugural "Building Hope Breakfast" A Success!
SNHBA and its HomeAid Southern Nevada chapter thank and salute all those involved in the success of the Inaugural "Building Hope" Breakfast on September 19 at the Wynn Las Vegas' Petrus Ballroom.

The event was a celebration of all the chapter has done to make a positive difference for the homeless population - and a look ahead to ways the chapter can do more. Approximately $23,000 was raised to benefit the chapter's continuing efforts.

Longtime SNHBA board member Tom Warden of The Howard Hughes Corp., served as emcee at the meeting. Speakers told inspirational stories about the chapter's work in the community and how the HomeAid Southern Nevada team of staff, volunteers and supporters are improving conditions for the homeless and near-homeless in the area. The speakers were Shalimar Cabrera of U.S. VETS and Jackie Lizaola of the Project 150 Youth Council.

The contributing sponsors were Guild Mortgage, Pardee Homes, Patriot Contractors, Sierra Air Conditioning, Southwest Gas Corp., Wells Cargo and Woodside Homes. Matching donors were Colliers International's Links for Life, Hirschi Masonry, and Ticor Title of Nevada

Much of the success must be attributed to the efforts of the special "Building Hope" Breakfast Committee, which included incoming chapter president Amy Thill of Warmington Residential, Stephenie Ireland Heagerty of Boral Roofing, Jodi Grover of Ticor Title, Tyson Clayton of Desert Companies, event planner Darby Fitzpatrick Reber of Open Invitation, Darren Wilson of Sierra Air Conditioning and Rocky Cochran of Pardee Homes. Special thanks go to Cathy Vo of the B&P Advertising Media Public Relations agency, professional photographer Jim Laurie, and SNHBA staffers Holly Nostro and Alexis Hayborn.

'Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month' Preparations
The chapter has started work on its campaign for "Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month," a national effort in November to bring awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness. The campaign will include a food drive to collect non-perishable items to donate to local community partners that provide food and meals to homeless and at-risk men, women and children. During last year's campaign, supporters contributed more than $3,000 in cash and $2,500 in food and hygiene supplies, which were given to two outstanding local groups that assist the homeless - Serving Hope Las Vegas and U.S. VETS Las Vegas. Additional details about this year's campaign will be available in October.
