Building Champions
A monthly newsletter to keep you informed.

CEO Update
HANDY has a rich, 29 year history filled with many remarkable moments.  May and June 2014 will undoubtedly go down in "HANDY HISTORY" as our greatest months to date!  As you'll read in this newsletter, the 9th Annual HANDY Scholars Breakfast sponsored by The Wasie Foundation and presented by Shutts & Bowen, LLP was a record shattering event. Over 600 guests filled the Hyatt Pier 66 to pay tribute to our Champions of Children and our remarkable college graduates.

We hit the high seas with the University of Miami on a shark tagging research project that advanced the cause of marine science and exposed our young people to a new frontier.  Months of preparation culminated in a mock trial at the Broward County Courthouse in which we trained the barristers of tomorrow.  Our young professionals group, NextGen, held a successful "field day" that raised money for HANDY while including our kids in fun, outdoor activities.  As you read about our many accomplishments and activities, consider joining our team.  Everyone plays an important role in our HANDY family.  From donors to mentors, we value your support. Join with us as we "build champions!"

HANDY's "Lunch Box" is a bi-monthly luncheon held at HANDY, usually falling on the 3rd Friday of the month.

It's free of charge, very laid back and the best way to get a sense of the heart and soul of HANDY. We always have young people and life coaches involved in the discussion. In addition, the "Lunch Box" has proven to build relationships among community members and spark ideas for enhanced collaboration and partnerships. Lunch, of course, is provided.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to Beth Bryant, EBryant@HANDYinc.org if interested.

HANDY Graduations

Graduations are a special time of year at HANDY.  We're proud of the Class of 2014! Our High School graduates are attending schools across the nation such as Mississippi State, Florida State, FIU, Broward College and beyond! 100% of our high school graduates pursue post-secondary education, it's a statistic we're proud of!  We also celebrated 17 college graduates, our largest class to date.  Look for our scholars to make their mark in boardrooms across our community!

In this picture, HANDY staff celebrated with Daphcar M., who graduated from the International School of Broward with a 4.3 GPA. Daphcar, who arrived at HANDY soon after the tragic Hatian earthquake, received a full scholarship to Broward College thanks to the kindness of the Rotary Club of Weston!

HANDY Kids Capture Life

Another Saturday night, another moment in the spotlight for HANDY's star photographers!

Fort Lauderdale-based gallery exhibit featured work created by our young people under the tutelage of Cameras For Kids Foundation instructors.

Court Is Now In Session

It's no secret that HANDY builds champions in the classroom, but in the courtroom as well? You bet!  Under the tutelage of HANDY Board Members Suzanne Driscoll, Judge Phyllis Kotey and attorneys who participate in HANDY's Nex Gen Program, our young people participated in a criminal mock trial based on an elaborate fact pattern. Students played every role in the court house and honed their speaking, writing, reading and analytical skills. Special thanks to Broward Judges Robert Diaz, Giuseppina Miranda and Ron Rothchild for their time and support!

MLB Cares
HUGE thanks to Evan Longoria, third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays for providing tickets and an unforgettable experience for our HANDY kids to attend a game against our own Miami Marlins!
HANDY Goes Shark Tagging

In May, participants in HANDY's CSC-funded Youth Force program at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School joined the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at the University of Miami for a remarkable (that's actually a conservative description, mind-blowing is more like it) shark tagging expedition. Working collaboratively, they had an amazing and productive day on the water, catching 11 sharks! The group helped sample, measure, tag and successfully release eight Sandbar sharks, two Nurse sharks and one Bull shark!
