HomeAid Makes an Impact, Locally and Nationally
John Monacci
John Monacci elected to HomeAid America Board

Congratulations to HomeAid Northern Virginia (HANV) Board Member John Monacci of Winchester Homes, for his election to the executive committee of HomeAid America's Board of Directors!

John, who was honored with HANV's 2014 President's Award for his exceptional dedication to ending homelessness in Northern Virginia, has served on HANV's board for seven years and was its 2011 president. He is a four-year member of HomeAid America's board. HomeAid Northern Virginia is one of HomeAid America's 15 chapters, which together make HomeAid a leading national non-profit provider of housing for the homeless.

HomeAid America CEO Peter Simons said of Monacci's election, "In addition to being a great leader for HomeAid Northern Virginia, John graced us by joining HomeAid America's board of directors a few years ago. Since then, his leadership and insight have been a great benefit to the organization nationally, and we are thrilled to take this to a new level by adding him to our executive committee. We look forward to him contributing to HomeAid, both locally and nationally, for years to come."

HomeAid America hosts national conference

Attendees of the HomeAid America Annual Conference enjoy a tour of HomeAid Southern Nevada shelter projects.

In March, HANV President Brian Davidson and Executive Director Christy Eaton attended HomeAid America's Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they had the opportunity to meet staff and board members from the organization's other chapters.

In addition to comparing notes and sharing best practices, the group went on a shelter tour of HomeAid Southern Nevada projects and took part in several education sessions that covered topics including homeless trends in demographics; project trends; and community outreach strategies, such as planning for November's Hunger and Homeless Awareness Month. As part of the community outreach discussion, Christy gave a brief presentation on how HANV has planned several successful Housing Forums.

HomeAid Builds Partnerships at NVBIA's Meet the Builder

HANV counts NVBIA's
Meet the Builder as a
not-to-be-missed event.

Strong partnerships are key to

HomeAid Northern Virginia's

mission of building and renovating facilities for the homeless, and the organization strengthened its ties - and created new ones - with past and potential partners at NVBIA's Annual Meet the Builder event last week.

WGB Forges New Partnership with Inova Loudoun

Thanks to a new partnership, the
Inova Fun Bus, staffed by Loudoun High School ROTC students, kept kids entertained while parents learned
about health insurance.

Women Giving Back (WGB) and Inova Loudoun have developed a new partnership aimed at providing health education and services to women from local shelters. The hospital will send staff to WGB's Store every month during shopping hours, so that clients can gain valuable health information after they finish shopping for free clothing and accessories. To keep children occupied while their moms are working with Inova staff, the hospital will organize activities and occasionally send its popular "Fun Bus," which offers fitness activities and entertainment for kids.

Enjoying the Show with HomeAid & Feld Entertainment

Nearly 120 homeless kids and their parents were treated to recent Disney on Ice and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus shows, after Feld Entertainment donated free vouchers to HomeAid Northern Virginia for distribution to local shelters. This month, 100 more kids and families will enjoy the circus, thanks to Feld's most recent donation of 100 additional tickets.

Did You Know?

Programs that help low-income people meet basic needs, more than half of which are housing assistance, made up just 2.2 percent of the federal budget in fiscal year 2013.

Studies show that offering housing can reduce the number of homeless at a lower cost to society than leaving them without homes. The Central Florida Commission on Homelessness found that housing costs $10,000 per person, per year, while continued homelessness costs law enforcement, jails, hospitals, and other community services $31,000 per person per year.
