HomeAid's Biggest Project of the Year Begins Next Week
|
On Friday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m., HomeAid and Stanley Martin Homes will break ground on the biggest project of the year - a new, 5,000 square foot residential facility for Youth For Tomorrow (YFT) at 11835 Hazel Circle Drive in Bristow, Va. The new home will allow YFT to expand on-campus residential services for up to 36 more girls every year, providing a safe and secure housing environment for pregnant teens or young mothers, homeless and runaway youth, and survivors of sex trafficking.
The project, with a retail value of $750,000, has drawn commitments from 85 trade partners, who will save YFT 69 percent of the total project cost through donated labor and materials. The savings will allow YFT to invest more money in the programs and services that will make a lasting difference in the lives of the young people in its care.
"It means a great deal to Stanley Martin Homes to support HomeAid as a Builder Captain for the YFT project," said Mike Cleary, corporate vice president of purchasing and quality. "Giving back to the communities in which we build is part of our company's social fabric. This project is unique due to the amount of involvement by Stanley Martin Home's YFT Project Team, and the support of our trade partners (manufacturers, distributors, and subcontractors). The collaboration, support, and commitment of all involved have provided the momentum to exceed our expectations in obtaining material and labor donations. It is an honor to work with so many who volunteer, team together, share resources, and provide financial support to this worthy community cause."
More than 650 linear feet of sewer/water lines will also be installed to serve this home and an additional four homes that YFT hopes to build in the future. The home will be built as a high-performance home, similar to those already being built by Stanley Martin Homes. The building team will use sustainable materials that are environmentally friendly/durable, as well as products that improve energy performance and require low maintenance. These building practices and applications will reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, allowing the savings to support YFT's valuable programs.
Construction of the home is expected to be completed in September and in time for YFT's 30th Annual Country Fair and Auction on October 3, 2015.

A sparkling new kitchen awaits a new family at a Homestretch property in Northern Virginia. |
HomeAid, M/I Homes, and 18 trade partners completed work on the renovation of a condominium in Northern Virginia this week, giving new hope and a safe environment to a young mother and child who are survivors of domestic violence. The condo, owned by Homestretch, will also give the mother the level of security and stability she needs in order to bring a second child from China, the family's home country. The mother and her second child were separated at birth four years ago.

Women Giving Back Sees Increase in Teen Volunteers
|
Women Giving Back (WGB) is used to changing lives, but it's typically been the result of a stylish new suit for a woman about to go on a job interview, a backpack for a nervous new student, or hip new clothing for a child who isn't used to going shopping in a retail setting. Over the past year, however, WGB volunteers have noticed a major uptick in the number of teens who are putting in service hours at The Store, as well as an increase in mother-son teams who are volunteering together at clothing drives and sorts.
