Habitat for Humanity - 4-Star Rowhouses
Located in Renton's Benson Heights neighborhood, a 4.51-acre lot is being developed by Habitat for Humanity as housing for low-income families. The 9 units that were recently completed are part of a larger 41-unit development which will be built with a heavy reliance on volunteer labor. From foundation formwork to final touches, volunteers are involved to help keep construction costs down and maintain the units' affordability. Consisting of a mix of 2 and 3-bedroom units, homeowners are pre-selected based on their income (60% or less than the average median income in the area) and their willingness to partner and spend 500 hours building their future homes.

Moving the Market Award Winner
Built Green was honored to announce the winner of 2016's Moving the Market Award at the Winter Gala and Installation of Officers. The Moving the Market Award, as its name suggests, honors green builders who have contributed in a significant way to advancing the green building market. We were happy to give the award to Dwell Development, who has consistently set a high bar for green building (all of their homes are Built Green 5-Star or better). Dwell moves the market by challenging themselves (they built the first speculative Emerald Star in Seattle), and by sharing their knowledge while encouraging others to do the same. We would like to thank the Dwell team for all they do to advance green building and Built Green! Read more here.

Just Sustainabilities: Re-imagining e/quality, Living Within Limits
February 28, University of Washington's Kane Hall, Seattle
Professor Julian Agyeman outlines the concept of "just sustainabilities" - the need to ensure a better quality of life for all in a just and equitable manner within the limits of supporting ecosystems. Integrating social needs and welfare offers us a more "just," rounded, and equity-focused definition of sustainability and sustainable development, while not negating the very real environmental threats we face. Examples range from just sustainabilities focusing on ideas about "fair shares" resource distribution globally; planning for intercultural cities; achieving well-being and happiness; the potential in the new sharing economy and the concept of "spatial justice." This is a free event. Learn more here .
