A Word from the Rabbi
Rabbi Paltiel

Once in a while I'll use this column to muse about the goings on in our beautiful community. It allows me to keep the message light, rather than discussing Israel or current events (which tend to get my blood pressure up) or philosophizing (not a popular sport for late July)... So here goes:

Summer here at Chabad has been rather busy, and it aint over!

Some of the activities thus far:
  • Our Berkowitz Gan Israel Day Camp, under Esther's leadership, is having one of its best seasons ever

  • The daily minyan hasn't missed a single day! Including the MINYANAIRE'S brunch that follows

  • The History & Philosophy of Chabad lecture (by visiting scholar Rabbi Sholom Avtzon) was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed (Thank you Shlomo Brody for arranging and sponsoring the speaker & brunch)

  • Tisha B'Av Film showing of Beneath the Helmet was attended by 50 people last Sunday

Don't miss these upcoming events:

  • A JLI "mini-series" - consisting of two 90 minute lessons - takes place this Sunday and next beginning at 10am. The topic is Judaism's view on the moral dilemmas involving the war on terror. We will deal with questions such as is it ethical to apply torture to extract information for the war on terror, and whether it is right to exchange prisoners or pay ransom. So far 18 students have registered for what promises to be a fascinating study of Torah's view on a modern, relevant subject. Info & RSVP by clicking here.

  • For CHABAD MEMBERS: The Membership BBQ takes place next Thursday at the Shurka residence in Sands Point, click here for details and to RSVP. It's an opportunity to get together with other "Chabadniks" for a pleasant social event in an awesomely beautiful setting. Thank you Marcy & Manny for hosting us year after year!
Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

When 'Tevye' Came to the Rebbe
Theodore Bikel

When the late Theodore Bikel, star of Broadway's Fiddler on the Roof, came to the Rebbe he was asked something unusual.

Theodore Bikel, the legendary Jewish actor and folk singer who passed away on Monday at the age of 91, was deeply impacted and intrigued by the Chabad movement, despite his difference of opinion and lifestyle...

A Story

The Professor and the Hot Dog

This is a story of a professor who got entangled with a hot dog. The hot dog lost. The professor won. Forever.

Dr. Velvl Greene was a professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Minnesota. This was around 1960. Professor Greene was involved in the NASA program to find life on Mars. No, the hot dog was not from Mars. Hang in there...

Question of the Week
Question of the week
What's a Shadchan (Matchmaker)?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: Is there truth to the rumor that if you do 3 successful shidduchs (i.e. match three people with their future spouse) you go to the highest level of heaven? What is the theory behind it? And is it true that you are completely absolved of any sins you may have committed too??

Daily Thought
Not Is

How could it be?

How could a human ego know it is nothing but a figment of a greater mind—and yet remain a human being?

How could a physical eye see infinite light—and yet remain an eye?

How could a stone scream out that there is nothing else but G‑d—and yet remain a stone?

It must be that the true reality of all things is not to be, but to know.

There is nothing else but knowing that there is nothing else but G‑d.

Hemshech 5672, part 2, p. 1003; Maamar Asher Bara 5739.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Va'etchanan

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G‑d to allow him to enter the Land of Israel, but G‑d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.

Continuing his “review of the Torah,” Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. “Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G‑d speaking out of the midst of the fire... and live?... You were shown, to know, that the L‑rd is G‑d... there is none else beside Him

Moses predicts that in future generations the people will turn away from G‑d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G‑d, and return to obey His commandments.

Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shema, which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G‑d (“Hear O Israel: the L‑rd our G‑d, the L‑rd is one”); the mitzvot to love G‑d, to study His Torah, and to bind “these words” as tefillin on our arms and heads, and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our homes.
