TO:            Byron Nelson Parents and Caregivers - and all NISD stakeholders

FROM:       Ryder Warren, Superintendent

SUBJECT:  Byron Nelson High School

Many are aware of the challenges we had today at Byron Nelson High School. The most important news to report tonight is that the building and the grounds of Byron Nelson High School have been given the "all clear" by the police departments working this issue, so all vehicles can be released by to their owners, and the campus will be ready for school in the morning.

I also want to give everyone as much detail as we can right now, and there will be more information releases to follow tomorrow. The following are the facts that we know at this time:
  1. A bomb threat was made against Byron Nelson High School on Monday afternoon. The first message indicated the threatening individual was inside the building, so we immediately went into an internal lockdown.
  2. Many different police agencies responded, including a bomb squad.
  3. NISD was instructed by law enforcement to keep students in lockdown until the building was thoroughly swept by police.
  4. Students and staff were released a little after 6 p.m. Monday to go home; however, law enforcement would not release any vehicles from the premises until the bomb squad has given the "all clear" for all vehicles on site.
  5. NISD will have the Byron Nelson counseling staff plus additional campus counselors on hand at the school tomorrow if any students, staff, or parents need any extra support.
  6. NISD will work hand in hand with local and regional law enforcement to identify the perpetrator(s) of this crime.
As the superintendent of this district, know that we are very sorry our kids, staff, and parents had to deal with this today. I would also like to sincerely thank all of our law enforcement partners, our staff members, and our students and parents for such great behavior through all of this. Byron Nelson High School is a special campus, and the way all handled this stressful day showed that specialness.

Again - we are cleared for a regular school day tomorrow, and my heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to all those involved for their extraordinary efforts today.

Sincerely,

Ryder Warren, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
