Brian Brickler Wins Blue Chip
  null

Brian Brickler (B-18) with crew Mike Tyriver navigated the shifty win conditions during 4 races over 2 days to win the 54th Annual C-Scow Blue Chip Championship at Okauchee Lake this past weekend. Brian's consistency with 3 top five finishes helped propel him to the win over an extremely deep group of competitors. Rounding out the top 5 were Tim Krech (M-20) in 2nd, Peter Keck (N-181) in 3rd, Ryan Grosch (N-74) in 4th, and Scott Tarmann (E-55) in 5th. Individual race winners included Dave Smith (E-16), Ed Eckert (A-136), Steve Schmidt (E-88), and Tim Krech (M-20). Full results can be found at www.olyc.org. Okauchee was proud to be host of this event for the first time our club. And we felt fortunate to have the support and guidance of Joe & Cheryl Twomey throughout the transition and during the entire regatta.

The C fleet was at its best both on and off the water during the entire weekend. Doc Henschel's hand painted trophies will be coveted by the winners for years to come. And the sportsmanship displayed by John Porter epitomized the fellowship of the C fleeters. John gave up his boat just prior to the final race to a fellow competitor that was in the hunt for the title after they had experienced equipment issues. The food and hospitality was spectacular all weekend. There are too many people to thank individually from both Okauchee and representatives from other lakes that helped make this event a success, but know that your efforts were greatly appreciated! Finally, thanks to all the competitors for traveling and competing in this special event.

Looking forward to 2014!

We generally have nice weather and winds this time of year at Lotawana, and boat traffic should be light post Labor Day.

Take A Junior Sailing!

Dear C Sailor-

Good luck to all in the final races of the season.  I am writing to ask you to consider taking a kid (or other interested party) sailing this Fall.  Our fleet is showing a remarkable comeback in the under 25 category and we all need to pull together to keep it going:

-The new boats and new sticks are great.  ILYA, old 1, new 2, old 3-4, new 5-7, old 8-10, new 11, etc.  For those that can, consider a new boat and selling yours to a new sailor.  Mine is sold to a junior sailor and a new one on order.

-We are the fleet that the X (and other junior fleet) graduates should come to.  Pitch the fact that their friends are moving into the fleet and the sailing and social events are great. Over 25% of the WYA sailors were under 25 years old.

-And it isn't just the boys. Sail numbers E3, E66, B117, B217, B77, B219, B111, V50, not only show that girls can do it but that they can beat the boys as well.

-For many years I have invited the X graduates from our lake to each sail a race with me as crew during our Labor Day series to show them that they can do it and how much fun it is after what they have been sailing.  It works. Get them out, market to them and show them the way to keep sailing is to get into the C fleet.

See you on the water,

Kent Haeger, B-12
