Csars 2015

25+ nominations and many wins for your festival!

We are still just a few days away from announcing your 2015 Line-up, but we wanted to share this incredible news with you. The films already confirmed for your 11th edition amassed an astounding 25+ nominations. While we are still securing one or two additional movies, we can already tell you that there will be an extraordinary number of wins among the Selection, continuing the trend set last year (7 total). The best of French Cinema is not just a promise, it's our commitment to you!

Also: Pierre Rochefort was nominated for Best Newcomer for Un Beau dimanche (Going Away) which you could see last year at Focus on French Cinema!

Oscars 2015

Alexandre Desplat wins at last

The French composer had been nominated 8 times before... without ever walking away with the statuette. With 2 nominations this year (The Imitation Game and The Grand Budapest Hotel), the expectations had doubled! Winning for Best Score with Wes Anderson's movie settles the, ahem... score for this giant of French and International cinema.

At Focus on French Cinema, your ears had been touched by his work in Renoir, screened at your 2013 festival.

Other French Cinema notes at the Ceremony

- Screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrire  received an Honorary Award for his career. With less of his movies released over the last years, we never had the chance to show his work at Focus on French Cinema, but you can borrow many of his works - over 50 years - in the Alliance Franaise of Greenwich DVD collection.

- Whiplash Director Damien Chazelle, whose father is French, spent part of his childhood in France and still has family overseas.

- French-born Mathilde Bonnefoy was a producer and the editor of the Best Documentary winner, Citizen Four.

- Timbuktu was nominated for Best Foreign Film and, although it did not ultimately win, the 7 Cesars won on Friday should serve as consolation.

- Marion Cotillard was nominated for Best Actress and did not win, but was graceful on the red carpet and on stage, where she presented Best Song nominee "Everything is Awesome" (The Lego Movie).

The Last Song Before the War at the Avon Theatre

Thursday, March 12 - 7:30pm

In celebration of the month of La Francophonie, with the Alliance Franaise of Greenwich.

A visually stunning feature-length documentary that captures the power, beauty, and uncertain future of Mali's annual Festival in the Desert. Told through high definition footage captured at the 2011 festival, the film is a lyrical road trip through Mali, the birthplace of the blues, to the legendary city of Timbuktu where Grammy-award winning musicians play their hearts out in the dunes of the Sahara. After 12 years of success and unforgettable musical moments, the Festival in the Desert came to a halt in 2012 when the violent occupation of Northern Mali by extremists destabilized the entire Sahel region. To date, the festival and hundreds of thousands of refugees remain in exile.
