|I've hi-jacked the Cab-Alert button from Dan this week, and I gotta tell you, it's a doozy of an offering. I will get to it in a moment. But first, some wines need no help from us. They are really good, every year, and you already know about them. Case in point, Orin Swift has released their
Papillon Napa Valley Red 2009, and it is as delicious and as limited as ever. $55 Net.
Now on to the main event.... CAB ALERT!!!
MONTAGNA Cabernet Sauvignon
"Tre Vigneti" Napa Valley 2007 $50/bottle
The label says Napa Valley, but Montagna's estate vineyards are located 1200 feet above Napa's valley floor on Pritchard Hill. They have some famous neighbors: Continuum, Colgin, Bryant Family, OVID, and David Arthur to name a few. Actually, proprietor Bob Long and his brother David founded David Arthur Vineyards together in 1984. Montagna is now Bob's primary focus, and he and winemaker Nile Zacherle (he makes the David Arthur wines too) are making some seriously killer Cabernet at some seriously silly prices.
The 2007 vintage is a blend of three vineyard blocks, hence the name
"Tre Vigneti" or "Three Vineyards." It spends 23 months in 60% New French oak
and has a splash of Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petite Verdot (1.5%) blended in for added complexity and spice. What's it taste like? Well, it's big, rich, decadent, spicy as all-get-out and just flat-out tasty. Smell dark fruits, pie spice, vanilla and earth. Taste deep black cherries and sweet earth. The finish lingers on and on. For my dollar, I don't think there is a more under-priced Cabernet in the shop (but don't tell the winery that).
