- CAIR-Oregon Welcomes Bias Enhancement to Charges Against Suspect Who Rammed Muslim Man
The Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oregon) today welcomed a decision by the Oregon Department of Justice to add a bias enhancement to the charges against a suspect who allegedly used his car to intentionally ram a Muslim man in Lincoln City. Perry G. Nicolopoulos is suspected of intentionally ramming a Muslim man after a minor collision in a parking lot in Lincoln City. Nicolopoulos is being charged with attempted murder in addition to 11 other felonies and four misdemeanors. "This incident once again shows that hate is thriving here in Oregon and we all must do more to combat it," said CAIR-Oregon Spokesperson Zakir Khan. "Oregon Muslims continue to be subjected to threats and violence that only serve to traumatize our community. We call on all stakeholders: citizens, teachers, parents, government officials, and law enforcement to do more to stamp out hate in this state. This can no longer be an issue that marginalized communities are forced to fight by themselves."

That school's Principal Stephen Gorski wrote in a letter to parents that racial, ethnic and religious slurs and symbols were discovered last week scrawled on a toilet seat inside a boys' bathroom. Last Friday, racial slurs were also discovered carved into a classroom doorway. . . "We condemn this alarming pattern of bigotry and stand in solidarity with the NAACP's Anne Arundel Chapter, the Caucus of African-American Leaders and local clergy and allies to support impacted students," said CAIR's Maryland representative Zainab Chaudry.
