Rallies, phone calls and emails matter! Gov. Brown tweeted on 12/4: "I'm also considering state bonding as a way for Oregon to participate in an Elliott Forest purchase agreement that maximizes public benefits." Wow!  This is an idea others have proposed before. The state has about $1 billion in bonding money and could use it to buy-out the Common School Fund interest on the Elliott. It's very encouraging to hear they are considering other options!

Valve Turners Live Video Web Conversation

December 13th, 5pm

Five activists in four states have taken direct action for the climate by shutting off 5 pipelines carrying Canadian tar sands oil into the US.

The valve turners will host a live video web conversation. Hear stories from their experience shutting down the tar sands pipelines, preview the short film about the actions, and join the Q&A session to learn more about the legal strategy and how you can be part of this important front in our movement.

Film-screening and Audience Discussion

December 15th, 6pm
Bijou Art Cinema

We the People 2.0 is a visual essay about the loss of democracy in the U.S. The film describes a profound change in thinking at the grassroots level. The story unfolds through the eyes of rural people who have faced decades of toxic dumps, drilling and mines in their communities. We learn with them that the reason why they "get what they don't want, again and again," is because they are, by law, truly powerless. These people come to understand that the U.S. has become an oligarchy, run by the corporate few who ignore the rights and will of the people. Thomas Linzey, a nonprofit attorney's inspiring words shows how, we, the people, can turn this around and lay claim to our democracy. See the trailer.

$5-8. With Community Rights Lane County co-founder and public interest attorney, Ann Kneeland.  Presented by Encircle Films in partnership with Community Rights Lane County.

Citizens' Climate Lobby Meeting

December 15th, 6 pm
Upstairs Growers Market at 454 Willamette in Eugene

The meeting will listen to a  recording of the monthly CCL educational conference call with Sam Daley-Harris and Jay Butera About Sam Daley-Harris and Jay Butera:

Most members of Congress do not go to Washington with the intention of  being a champion for climate change solutions. So, how then do we turn  them into one? Sam Daley-Harris, founder of RESULTS (an organization that  advocates for effective solutions to the causes of poverty) and CCL Senior  Congressional Liaison Jay Butera joined our December call to walk us through  the process of moving members of Congress up the ladder of leadership on  climate change.

Sam is currently the CEO and Founder of the Center for Citizen Empowerment  and Transformation and author of "Reclaiming Our Democracy."

Jay was instrumental in the founding of the bipartisan House Climate  Solutions Caucus and is featured in Season Two of National Geographic's  documentary series on climate change, "Years of Living Dangerously."

Eugene Resistance Training (ERT): Course Introduction and Discussion

December 17th, 3-5pm
Upstairs Growers Market 454 Willamette St, in Eugene

Eugene Resistance Training will be meeting for the first time on Saturday Dec. 17. Our classes will be based off of the CANVAS (Center for Applied NonViolent Action and Strategies) Core Curriculum, a series of lessons and lectures that are a synthesis of decades of experience from successful nonviolent struggles, written and compiled by leaders across the world.

This special series of four classes will convene every Saturday from Dec. 31st to Jan. 21st, as well as the recommended introductory class on the 17th. We have the intention of providing current activists and new leaders with the best, most effective tools to confront the recent surge of deeply disturbing actions and rhetoric coming from newly elected officials. Eugene Resistance Training will be offering a intensified course so students will be exposed to the most essential content in a compressed timeframe, allowing them to make immediate use of new skills and techniques to effectively organize a group and run successful campaigns.

The organizers of Eugene Resistance Training want to offer the Eugene/Springfield community these tools to maximize the effectiveness of existing organizers and empower new leaders to come together and organize effectively and innovatively. All classes and materials are completely free, with no specific agenda being promoted except for the commitment to nonviolence as the most effective and humane strategy for resisting and eliminating repression.

The primary source document for the classes can be found here  (downloadable PDF). For more information on CANVAS, including further resources, please visit them here.

Any questions or requests for additional information can be directed to  eugresistancetraining@protonmail.com.

deeperblack

A Deeper Black: Race in America

February 3rd, 6pm
Knight Arena

Ta-Nehisi Coates (author of "Between The World and Me") does not tend to pre-write his keynotes. He talks extemporaneously, forcefully, on the events of the day-sometimes, that literal day-and incorporates themes from his writing.

Lately, his focus is on the systemic racism that is inseparable from the growth of the nation: the racist policies that have plundered black bodies, black property, and black lives for economic and social gain. How can we reconcile these acts, many of them ongoing, with the supposedly postracial country some claim we are moving towards?

Other related topics include the distressing series of murders of unarmed black people that has rocked the country and dominated headlines. Coates does not offer a casual "snapshot," does not provide easy answers, and does not dole out false hope.
