My career as a police officer has seen me work in agencies as small as 3 full time officers to leading an agency with almost 700 officers, and everything in between. These experiences have left me with the belief that when it comes to policing, "one size doesn't fit all." Policing within the U.S. is quite unique around the world for many reasons, but one of the most notable is the predominance of police agencies with fewer than 40 officers. Neil Ferdelman is in his 40th year in law enforcement, beginning with his appointment as a Police Cadet in Hamilton, Ohio in January of 1976. He served as a member of the Hamilton Police Department for over 36 years with assignments as a Police Officer, Traffic Officer, Police Detective, Police Sergeant, and Police Lieutenant. Read On

The Avon Police Department is a small agency of 20 personnel located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, at the base of the world class Beaver Creek Ski Resort. The town is located on Interstate 70, half way between Denver and Grand Junction.In 2009, the department began the process of seeking CALEA Law Enforcement Recognition. In 2012, the department was successful in achieving Law Enforcement Recognition, and immediately began to seek full accreditation, with a goal of achieving this in the fall of 2015.

Small Agencies Need CALEA Accreditation

The challenges facing law enforcement today have become increasingly complex. The attention and focus on everyday actions of law enforcement officers, policies set by agency CEO's, and the rulings by courts are now appearing as common place headlines in the media. Smaller law enforcement agencies have especially had closer scrutiny placed on them in the past few years. There is no better time than now for the leadership of smaller law enforcement agencies to be operating under best practices in law enforcement. Read On
