Improving Communications in the 911 Center

David T. Moore
CALEA Commissioner

My decision to relocate to Rochester, NY in 2006 to take an appointment as chief of police was made much easier knowing I would be taking over a CALEA accredited police agency. Upon my arrival, one of the first things I came to appreciate was the nationally recognized and award winning Monroe County/Rochester 911 Center. Now as the Director of Public Safety for Monroe County, NY, I have the distinct privilege of overseeing that very same agency. Read On

Communication Accreditation Strengthens Policies

Kristi Warden, Accreditation Manager
Huber Heights Police Division-Communications
Huber Heights, OH

The accountability that Public Safety Communications Accreditation has brought to our dispatch center has been immeasurable since receiving our first communications accreditation in 2007. We didn't start our journey by going through the communications accreditation process first. We began it with our law enforcement agency, which was initially accredited in 2005. That same year, we saw the importance and benefits of what had been accomplished during our accreditation experience. With excitement and anticipation we decided to pursue those same successes in our communication center. We embarked on the journey of being the first communication center in Ohio to become CALEA accredited.

Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies
   null
The Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics is conducting the 2014 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA).  The IACP supports this data collection effort and hope you will see the tremendous value of the study and complete your survey. The
CSLLEA  is the only national census of law enforcement agencies that provides complete personnel counts, agency operating budgets, and the characteristics and functions of every law enforcement agency in the U.S.  Without your agency's data, the results will not be complete and accurate. The information collected will benefit your agency in a variety of ways including: providing comparisons with other agencies, identifying agency needs, justifying budgets, and budget requests.

If you have already completed your survey, please accept our sincere thanks.  If not, to ensure your agency is included, we ask that you complete your survey by May 1, 2015.

You can complete the questionnaire online at: http://connectcai.norc.org/go/csllea

If you have any questions on completing the survey, need your Personal Identification Number (PIN), or if you prefer to receive a hard copy, please contact NORC at [email protected] or call toll free at 877-233-5671. If you have general comments about the CSLLEA program, feel free to contact Andrea Burch, at [email protected].

Liability Analysis: A Forecasting and Mitigation Tool

Dan Shaw
Regional Program Manager

CALEA's Public Safety Communication Accreditation program requires agencies to conduct three annual analyses related to employee grievances, recruiting and potential liabilities. While all three are considered best practices for a professional agency and are essential to the agency's management process, the liability analysis provides the agency executive a tool to forecast a wide range of potential threats and an opportunity to develop mitigation strategies to alleviate possible civil suits. CALEA Staff Retirement

Linda Phillips is a 33-year veteran of the Commission, and has been employed with CALEA practically since it's inception. Linda was hired as a typist for the first CALEA Standards Manual. Since then, her job developed into technical support for client agencies and staff.  She was instrumental in developing the computer-assisted self-assessment software program, originally known as ASAP and now called CACE; for which she still provides IT support and training.  Additionally, Linda managed computer operations and data processing for CALEA staff, as well as assisting with the Commission HR services.

Linda's contributions to the Commission have made a tremendous impact to the accreditation process and countless agencies.  She has been a valuable resource to the CALEA family and will be sorely missed.  Linda is planning to enjoy a relaxed life at the beach with her husband David and her family and friends.
