A Message From the Chair
CALEA, A Ready Solution

Myers
Richard W. Myers
Commission Chair
I've written before about my very positive impression of Canadian policing and the impact their professional image had on me as a frequent visitor in my youth. Despite the massive size of this great country, much of it is sparsely inhabited. In fact, I've heard it said that an overwhelming majority of Canadian residents live within a few hours drive of the US border. CALEA's International Role

Gary Cordner
CALEA Commissioner

CALEA was created in the United States in 1979 in direct response to serious and widely recognized crime and policing problems that had reached crisis proportions in the 1960s and 1970s. Of CALEA's four founding organizations, only the IACP had an official international remit at that time, and even that organization was overwhelmingly American in membership and outlook. Peel (ON) Regional Police

I have been involved in the CALEA process since 1995, an assessor since 1997, and a team leader since 2000. There have been several changes to the accreditation process over these years. All notes were completed in long hand and final reports were a minimum of 50 pages. Read on

Brantford is in the process of preparing for a December assessment to receive Advanced Law Enforcement Reaccreditation. During this cycle, we have experience firsthand how the accreditation process has benefited our police service.

Subject to Debate
Accreditation, Professionalism, and Legitimacy

CALEA continues to evolve becoming more efficient and dedicated to providing best practices in public safety. Sharing the benefits of accreditation with public safety agencies and the communities they serve remains a primary focus for the Commission.

Commissioner Cordner and Commissioner Myers addressed accreditation and legitimacy in the June/July/August issue of PERF's Subject to Debate newsletter .
