April 2018
One Fact You Need to Know:
Foster youth are 2x as likely to suffer from PTSD as war veterans
For children in foster care, the effects of being separated from a parents can often be as traumatizing as the abuse or neglect itself. In fact, foster youth are twice as likely to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as combat veterans (2016 California Children's Report Card).

Stories from the Work: Mary and Jade
When Mary entered the foster care system, she had trust issues, particularly with adults. Mary had been molested by her stepfather and again by her father. It’s no  wonder she didn’t trust anyone.

When Mary first met her CASA Jade, the 14  year-old was shut-off from others, did not like to follow rules and thought she had all  the answers in life.  Jade helped change all of that.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
No one likes to think child abuse exists in their community. But sadly, it does in every community in America. Here in Silicon Valley, approximately 1,500 children were found by the courts to have been abused or neglected by their families. When that happens, the child may enter foster care, which can be a disorienting, frightening and unsettling experience for any age child.

As we observe Child Abuse Prevention Month, let's recommit ourselves to ending the vicious cycle of abuse, and to stand up for every child too young to speak for themselves.

Most Foster Children Yearn for Home

“This Is Us,” the hit TV series which concluded its second season, depicts the emotional struggle of a child attempting to fit into her welcoming foster family while silently agonizing over the mother she is separated from. It’s a struggle virtually anyone who works or volunteers within the child welfare system recognizes.
