June is National Reunification Month
This June, we celebrate the important accomplishments of parents and the many professionals, including Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), who work on getting children home safe after they’ve been in the foster care system. It's Child Advocates' goal to make sure children are supported with a CASA and have what they need to move forward in a positive path, when reunifying with their family.
Celebrating Fathers and Male Mentors on Father's Day
This Father’s Day, many families will spend time with one another, celebrating the men in their lives – fathers, grandfathers, uncles and brothers.  Unfortunately, many boys and young men in foster care who are in need of guidance and support do not have a male mentor or father figure in their life. Why aren't more men volunteering? Adam Escoto, a CASA and former educator, has some thoughts on this in an Op Ed piece that will appear in the Mercury News later this week.

Los Altos 5k Walk/Run Raises Funds and Awareness for Foster Youth

The 2nd Annual Lost Altos 5k Walk/Run for Foster Youth presented by El Camino Hospital was a big success bringing in more than $15,000 with 159 participants and 50 volunteers.

Los Altos resident and Child Advocates board member Debbie Crouse organized the event to raise awareness about Child Advocates and how the agency makes a real difference in the lives of foster children.
June is LGBTQ Pride Month

Did you know that LGBTQ foster youth are over-represented in foster care? 30% of LGBTQ youth report physical abuse at the hands of a family member after coming out.

For the LGBTQ foster youth who has experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse, the supportive role of the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is crucial to that child’s mental health and well-being.

Child Advocates is proud of the work our volunteers do every day in Silicon Valley. We are proud of the welcoming way they help foster children navigate their lives, relationships, orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. And we are proud of the commitment our board, staff, and volunteers have made to not only being welcoming, but always striving to do better. These children and youths deserve our very best.
